My Fraim-a-like

Dear All, having spent far to long trying to design a new rack for my mainly Naim gear, I decided that I couldn't better Naims own design, so.....inspired by this and spured on by PFM'r's HostilePhantasm extremely professional version I'm embarking on my own attempt/version:D . It is coming along nicely  I am at a stage to take a few piccies to show how it is coming along. So here we go, I'm using a 19mm white beech veneered MDF for the shelves, layered up MDF for 3 uprights. I plan to get smoked glass for the equipment shelves and use metal cone/spikes to support the lot (cpc farnell items).

So far I recon I can make 7 shelves for about £330-350, we shall see!

This shows the router template laid out on 1:1 plans I prepared:

Here are the main parts, finished beech shelves and uprights:

Hope this may help others thinking of doing the same.

Nick

Very, very nice :) Please be sure and post more pictures when it's all finished, this is a really nice looking project. Thanks for sharing!

hacker / YNWOAN, Thanks for kind comments, I'll keep the pictures coming as I make more progress.

YNWOAN, I'm going to use cones 18mm high & 18mm dia for all layers and under glass, except very bottom where I'll use matching 43mm long cone/spikes. I'm just waiting for them to arrive from cpc, part number LS00337. I did consider ball bearings and cups but really had no way of making these myself.

Cheers Nick.

Are these any good:-

A little expensive but would complement all your hard work.

Hi Volobuev, I worked the design out in autoCAD (Computer aided design software) as I'm an architect by profession. Then plotted it out 1:1 to make templates etc. (perk of the job having access to plotter).

Happychappy, yes I saw TomTom sells the actual ball bearings / cups for under the shelf, and I may buy these in the future, but just to get it finished and in use I'm these:

Fioravanti, thanks for pointing that out but i don't fry chips so I should be ok, although I am considering putting into the living room when it is finished!

Nitrous,
There are a few things that would improve your design and get it closer to Naim if you would like some feedback? The hole in the middle is important (1st Panel mode).

It looks stunning however... Keep up the good work.

John

John. Yes you are right I'm missing the central hole, and I believe the uprights may be aluminium? You have to draw the line somewhere with a DIY project, and this was actually the first time I have used a router, so I decided (for this version) to simplify matters! Who knows as it seems to be progessing well I may do a mark ll version. Do you know if the 'holes' are the same in the base as they are in each level?

Thanks for input Nick

Same for all levels... If it is a blank level it is upside down.... I have a Fraim if you need any close ups ;)

The shelf hole just needs 3 holes and a jigsaw the glass should cover it...

3 screws at 120 degrees to each other may be a cheap way to do the ball 'holder' for the glass.

You could try and core out the uprights if you can and where they meet the main shelf try 3 balls to add stability maybe and isolation... It's your design go and have fun... I have a few ideas on where there could be improvements possibly on the Fraim.

I have some smoked Mana glass kicking about if you want to pm me (some has little chips). I'm in Essex.

Hi John, Thanks for that, I was considering coring out the uprights, so I may give this a go. I'm in the process of applying some varnish and paint! so when it gets to the next stage I'll post a few more images. Glass is on order, but thanks for offer:)

Bit of an update: Base layer and first shelf layer finished, although still no glass yet:( so using some old target shelves.

Laurenth, yes is was that thread that spurred me on! Fear not if you can't achieve the stainless steel parts, the ones I've used are really good quality considering the cost, and much cheaper than having them custom made in stainless:) You also have adjustability for each level!

This looks stunning, but I would appreciate some sort of costs. I would like a stab at something myself.

Hi garyi, I'm pretty much on target for budget cost I stated in 1st thread, about £350.

Veneered mdf (19mm) - £75
Glass (6mm toughened) - £118
Spikes - £75
Paint/varnish etc. - £35
Plain mdf for uprights (18mm) / template(6mm) £18
cutting blades/drills etc. - £20

Still way cheaper than Fraim, and you can't buy anything at that price worth having, so give it a go!

Hope this helps. Nick
