One picture is worth a thousand words! This shows me more of what's inside than any other I have seen, and clears up several misunderstandings.
Thanks
Bob

Though this picture is before the Fusion upgrade.

I assume John is planning a new replacement 'PSU' board which will utilise the 9 pin DIN connector and the CN1 and reuse the on off switch.

Taking DC from external PSU via DIN plug>on/off >CN1>CN2.

Hence bypassing the need for a Plydac case :D

Which is fine except that in any apparatus using an unshielded or poorly shielded crystal, a metal case appears to act as an rf echo chamber.

(I noticed yesterday that at least one manufacturer now boasts non-metallic enclosures. Assuming that means some variety of carbon fibre it's not going to be cheap. Or maybe 3d printing a case is now economically viable?

Hope you had a worthwhile trip to Munich. The truly dramatic effect of using 3 Calex to power the MDAC has got a few of us wondering whether there are even more gains to be had from using an ultra low noise regulator. As far as I can determine this one is at the leading edge of IC regulator technology:

So a couple of thoughts spring to mind. First, do you think it would be worthwhile implementing a 5 rail PS for the MDAC using these regulators? Second, is this regulator something that could be incorporated into the FDAC PS to improve performance even further?

I did a rough lash up of the 3 calex psu today, it's very messy and not in a case but it works.

Had a very quick listen and it sounds incredible. I also replaced the faulty caps in the MDAC and upgraded the smoothing caps in the 2 new calex's.

All that in one day...nice job!

Welcome aboard the good ship MultiCalex, she will sound sound somewhat harsh in her first week.

As is her way.

However when she leaves her somewhat harsh exterior, revealing only the finesse of her inner self.

All will seem worthwhile.

Cycling the power on/off for an hour or two will help her relax into her natural state. :D

Ian, if you want an off the shelf solution then the Linear Tech device can be found in lots of readybuilt regulators. You have to look at the overall performance of the circuit though, just using a specific regulator ic is no guarantee of sound quality.

6-super-regulators

The Belleson website is tricky, they cherry pick results, for example the super tweeters is typically lower noise, but they never show that. Their freebie pub psu might be good though, a super called?

Just came back from Munich listened to a lot of crazy expensive kit, but the real highlight of the show was meeting John and Jadidih101.

And being the first from PFM to see and touch the Detox

The quality of the chassis is just exceptional for a device in its category. I can see all other suffering from serious chassis envy.

Just unpacking from the Munich show, Really great to meet Jack, Rune & Jadidih101 :) although I still think we should have gate crushed the wedding - but I guess the stroll over the "love bridge" will have to suffice :D

We strolled around the show for inspiration for the FDAC front panel - but apart from two units, everything was really poor - and there was some REALLY expensive and bad sounding units... Even the Martin Logan system sounded bad :(

We must arrange a FDAC get together here in Czech Rep one its ready to ship / collection :)

FDAC front Panel - still work in progress, the basic requirement was to insure we could squeeze the 4.3" touch screen and slot loader into the design - we will progressively improve the ID:-

Maybe I'll pick up some ideas from the Munich show :)

I like the design in general. The centered CD drive is really nice. It's just that something feels off about it. Maybe it's the grayish colour or the extra gap next to the display frame. I'm not sure..
