Mattress recommendations

I suspect it is time for a new mattress as the current one is about 20 years old and far from flat. I’m a grade-A insomniac, so it clearly doesn’t work very well either. I had a quick look around online yesterday and ended up with total option paralysis. Not something I know anything at all about.

It looks like some of the more highly recommended modern types with memory foam etc seem to get very good reviews initially but don’t seem to last more than a year or two with people complaining about sags, lumps etc later. There is a very big difference in 5 star reviews from new buyers, 1 star from folk who have used it for a year or more on many sites. As such I’m more inclined towards conventional pocket-spring construction. I just want to do this once as I can’t even begin to describe how little this sort of thing interests me. Just looking for brands to shortlist or avoid.

Size standard double. Budget say up to £500, £600 tops. There would need to be delivery and collection of the old one as I don’t drive. I think my taste is fairly firm, but again it is not something I’ve ever thought about. I slept on a basic futon for many years. Whatever I buy I want it to last.

Any recommendations?

Also an insomniac, also do not trust memory foam. That in mind, I went into a bed specialist and lay down on about 20. Ended up with an 800 quid Slumberland, must be getting on for 30cm thick. Its great. I had hoped to spend 500. But testing them revealed what needed to be done.

I know firmer beds are better etc but if they are firm, I don't sleep. So mine is quite squishy.

I haven't regretted spending quite a bit on my mattress from https://johnryanbydesign.co.uk/. I bought an ultra-firm mattress back in 2018 and even though I'm a heavy guy it still feels as good as the day I bought it. I think their 'Origins' range would be what you need and for a double it's about £100 over budget though (double is about £700). Don't confuse 'firmness' and 'support' - you can have a supportive mattress which has a comfortable top layer. The main thing is to ensure your spine's straight and not curving like a banana all night. They do a "60 Day Love it or Return it" guarantee and to be honest it's the only way you'll know if it's right for you - 60 seconds on one in Dreams won't tell you whether 8 hours will be agony, you need to try it out properly for a period; and bear in mind initially it will feel very different so give it at least a couple of weeks of trialling. They'll take your old mattress away for £60.

They get excellent reviews as a company: https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/johnryanbydesign.co.uk

Yes. I went to Which? and chose the cheapest recommended one which was pocket sprung, and easy to buy from a company which would carry it upstairs, and which had no foam. For me, foam is too hot.

I can't remember the brand, I can check later if you want @Tony L - though it was five or six years ago and no doubt Which? recommended brands have changed. Buying it was so easy - they came, delivered, installed and removed. One good thing is that it's quite light, so relatively easy to turn/flip.

When you first sleep on the new mattress you realise how terrible your old one was.

Hypnos but it's not on budget. However I notice they now have an eBay outlet:

Another vote for pocket-sprung, having lasted 13 years with a memory foam which was always too hot and therefore somewhat unhygienic even with a topper/protector. We are on a 14,000-spring £2k/= expensive mattress and bought the softest rated option. No regrets even though it was more than I wanted to pay.

I'll happily sleep on almost anything so I leave this to my OH. We spent a decent whack on a John Lewis mattress but it didn't seem to last any longer. Last time around we went to Ikea and she tried out each of their ones finally declaring the cheapest £200 job to be the best. And it's been fine.

@Tony L if you take out all the rolls of used £50 notes the mattress might be a bit flatter : )

Btw you can have a lie down on Hypnos at John Lewis's.
Sustainable with British wool and the "first carbon neutral mattress manufacturer in the world" (!).

This. Memory foam makes me way too hot, so is worth remembering if you don't like to be too toasty at night.

Pillows can make a vast difference, but you really need to sleep with different ones to tell what provides you with the best night's sleep. By far the best that I have used were a discontinued line when I checked. "Designed" pillows, rather than just covers randomly stuffed with random wadding, are far from cheap - £30 each and up.

I also bought a mattress after "trying" in the store - total waste of time - you need a few hours or even days (several nights that is) to be certain.

Memory foam - as a single mattress - brilliant. I spent one night in hospital maybe 10 years ago and it was the best sleep that I could remember, when all things considered, a small miracle. That was maybe 100mm memory foam straight on something like small mesh concrete reinforcing.
I bought a double (with memory foam top layer) based on that - a very, very wrong decision.

Might be a bit over budget - you didn't specify a size - and £45 for old mattress removal. We bought one a couple of years ago, it's firm, which I prefer. Can't speak highly enough of it. Well worth the money.

Don’t buy a bed online. Go to a place, such as John Lewis (sales on), and try a few. Avoid foam as they get hot. Pocket sprung FTW.

My findings foam (simba) is ok but can be hot in the summer months and needs rotating etc.
Have a combination mattress in another room which has springs and foam and is by far comfier and not hot in the summer months.
In a ideal world u need to tip up and test the mattress.

I spend many hours over many days (I was working nearby) lying on mattresses in John Lewis and listening to other customers and whatever the salespeople had to say. It's worth doing if you can find a place nearby.

We bought one from John Lewis about ten years ago, £600 for a king size, best mattress we’ve ever had in 44 years of married life.

We got one from Warren Evans a couple of years back, and I still love it.
Whatever you do, don't buy from Bensons For Beds - unless of course you're a fan of imaginary delivery dates that change daily.

Warren Evens are excellent, ours needs replacing after about 13 years. They will remove their own for free iirc. We'll probably buy from them again.

We were considering a Simba Hybrid.

OP - I do think you need to double your budget
