The thing about damped sprung resonance systems is that you don't need advanced equipment to determine it's resonant frequency or when it's critically damped. Both can be determined simply by observing and timing the behaviour of the system. Of course if you want to actually design a system to particular parameters in advance, rather than suck it and see swapping springs and altering damping, then you need to use the appropriate equations and know the properties of the springs and the dampers etc in use in advance.

Guilty but, hopefully, only of being on my hobby horse and not my high horse. In my defence, the idea of just removing the springs and using the stock grommets hasn't been re-hashed, or even hashed. And, at least, I didn't mention the war.
