Handing on your (small) fortune....

I once spent two and a half grand on a pair of amps I’d never heard so who am I to criticise? I know someone who bought his entire system without auditioning any of it

I think that even when you audition stuff at a dealers, you spend a couple of hours if you're lucky, in an unfamiliar environment & there will be some pressure from the retailer to push you in certain directions & success is never guaranteed. Once you're in a situation like mine, where you are mostly using older equipment & use cartridge rebuilding services etc, you're almost beyond the reach of retailer. It's the look on their face when you say that you're using an obsolete Linn Troika or whatever. I have a Naim NAC 32.5 arriving on Wednesday, which I shall load with RSL boards; I'll know what it sounds like when I switch it on!

32.5 lucky you all the ones I have seen lately are going for over my budget

Indeed, and they're getting quite scarce too. A lovely one went for £500 on eBay recently. I got this one for £380, it's cosmetically challenged shall we say, but nothing that I can't sort. I've been playing with an RSL loaded NAC 12S of late and it's a bit special; not enough inputs sadly, but the NAC 32.5 has 5, which will suffice! I had one in the 80's and it will be like visiting an old friend.

that it is a decent price, for ages they were cheaper than a 72 seems they are going up to same or higher value, i was looking for a 72 but getting too expensive time I swap boards

I bought a set of fancy drill-bits (thanks to the drill thread over on OT). I’m not even needing to drill anything right now. My financial decadence is making my look about for non-essential backlog items in my DIY list...... #livingthedream
Come on, you know you want the matching holes to go with them

Unless you are as mercenary as the dealers that probably a universal experience. Almost all my purchases have been based on a careful reading between the lines of reviews and living in Cornwall where they ain’t thick on the ground.
Frankly, anyone specialist that has survived in a dog eat dog environment for thirty years isn’t going to suddenly produce a dud. I’ve got a DAC that can tamper with the given sound to some degree so it’s a risky punt because of the price but, on balance, worth a look. If it’s a dog I’ll own up....:)

I must admit that those amps I bought on a whim use 211s, a tube I know quite well so maybe they weren’t such a big gamble :)

I’ve been on eBay since 2003. I used to buy expensive laptops to sell on locally when most were still leery about buying off the net. I enjoyed it and made a few Bob. Mostly I enjoyed working out the good guys from the chaff. Now I buy more casually than then but I’ve still not been scammed. You just get a feel for it. I did some serious hitch- hiking from the age of sixteen. It was essentially the same thing. You just learn the dos & donts. I could get from Folkestone to Cornwall in always under 12 hours. I did it regularly, it was actually more reliable than public transport at that time.

I’m a bit like the guy I bought the headphones off.... 2300 sales and 100% good feedback. He’s found a niche for picking up decent hifi and selling it on. I recognise the man as me when I was doing computers in the same way so it will turn up as expected I have no doubt.

im going to have egg all over my face if these headphones are as ‘weird’ as some reviewers say. But I I’m happy with that. I’ve taken a punt on my experience. I got a little shaky when I woke up the next day but I’ve manned up since then:)

Total misunderstanding on my part...As my wife will confirm, I am very much all in favour of indulgent spending. After all, i've just spent £170 on some Lego bricks!

Useful? no

Satisfying? certainly :D

(it's the new Space Shuttle STS31 + Hubble kit)
I'm getting that one for my Birthday ,is it as good as the Luna Module ?

hi Rosie....the answer is........ :) :) :) :)

It is magnificent.....(finished mine today, and it now sits on the shelf next to the LEM, and under the ISS!)

Probably second in magnificence only to the six hundred quids worth of Imperial Star Destroyer which I need to persuade my Dearly Beloved that Hubby really needs for his birthday...ROFL.

Heck, it's a choice of the Lego Imperial Star Destroyer or another Naim power supply..........oooh, tricky!

Superb !
Can't wait . Mine will stand over the LEM and next to the sublime Saturn 5

I've been playing with Lego for 56 years !

LOL, my S5 won't fit on the shelving I have. It stands upright on my office desk up against the side wall for protection against felines, between the desk and the wall mounted air-con unit - with about half an inch to spare.

All this talk of Lego makes me think I was deprived as a child! I never had any, nor a Scalextric. The latter I bought finally at the tender age of forty and it was a blast. My stepson was a difficult fifteen at the time. What fun we had! After all the male competitive was out the way we would have a small joint and enjoy it a lot more... ( this was gentler times; pre skunk)
