General Election 2024

For me, the most telling aspect of Sunak's 'Not waving, but drowning' speech, was his repetition of the endless 'Jam Tomorrow' message which has been trotted out ever since Neoliberalism arose under Thatcher and was entrenched further via Brexit.

You'd think people would have worked it out by now.. The Jam isn't even ordered..much less due for delivery..
It's all in the detail - jam tomorrow has been consistently delivered to the people it was aimed at.

It was a flippant reply for sure, apologies. But the serious point is the same: without a change of substance, you cannot get meaningful change. Meaningful change require government investment, regulation and a commitment to nationalisation of failing industries that are causing so much damage
The nationalisation of failing industries was one of the major factors that destroyed European social democracy in the 1960s-1970s; often done with an eye to the next elections rather than to the long-term economic effects. Dangerous!

I'm astonished that anyone thinks that because Labour are now occupying a far more centre-ist position, we're in for more of the same-old. Do I need to list the progressive policies adopted by Blair's government as opposed to the reactionary, cruel ones enacted by this? Same? Really?
I would trust Labour under Starmer to be less cruel and reactionary than the current bunch of moronic thugs but not necessarily much more competent.

Still got to be a big improvement though.

Labour have not adopted a more centrist position.

Social democracy is pretty centrist and Labour are far to the right of that.

Not sure how progressive Blair was, but alongside any list would have to go ‘who paid for it?’, and if the answer is PFI, then progress was temporary.

We are where we are because morals literally don’t count.

Best keep Thames water as it is then?

And creating hate figures to blame for any imperfection.

Just a marketing tool. The Tories are the perfect example; noisily creating a ‘hostile environment’, scapegoating refugees, the homeless, the disabled, the LGBTQ+ community, civil servants with lanyards etc etc as a smokescreen behind which to steal countless £bns from us all. As ever if you want to know what a Tory thinks just empty their pockets. Just parasites. Nothing more complex or nuanced than that.

Labour for me is still an unknown quantity as to their policies. The Tories have confirmed they will cut benefits for the disabled and there is an deafening silence from Keir Starmer on this issue; does this mean he is to some extent in agreement with the Tories? In the past the Labour Party had clear socialist principles and would have reacted instantly to reassure and protect the benefits of the disabled...?

If people remain passive and re-elect this government by default, we're looking at another five years of the same.

I'm not currently supportive of Labour, Starmer seems to be a right-wing wolf in a left wing sheep's clothing. However, the country is in dire need of change; this situation cannot persist indefinitely. We won't know unless we try.

I'm skeptical that much will improve under Starmer, but I do believe the upcoming election could result in an unprecedented landslide victory for Labour, unlike anything previously witnessed in British electoral history.

Compared to under Corbyn?

Corbyn is irrelevant to the fact that Labour are now at least as right wing as the Tories, and I would argue are further right wing than the Tories on economics. Labour don’t even talk about being socially progressive anymore, because that would require government investment and their ironclad fiscal rules won’t permit it.

Let's see. We need a change and they're the shoo-in it would seem. As/more right wing? Let's see again. I guarantee they will be less evil and cruel.
