Coronavirus - the new strain XIX

My first thought when I read "Climate Crisis Advisory Group" was "Oh God, not another batsh*t mentalist faction of Conservative Backbenchers a la ERG or CRG". :)

David King was unfortunate not to share the nobel prize in 2007 of is work on heterogeneous catalysis, (think catalytic converters in cars,) as I've said previously. He is one of the country's very top scientists. Don't join Sean in his naive trolling.

There is no time for a new strain update to be ready for the autumn, testing takes several months, so all that is possible now is top ups of the original

They've already bought Pfizer, a couple of months ago. They don't yet have regulatory approval for mixed doses though

Mancunians have been banned from Scotland, of course such travel bans were not in force ahead of the England game. Rather cynical IMV. Trains from Glasgow go through Manchester.

Exactly, he's published over 500 respected research papers and is a Professor of Physical Chemistry serving at several universities including Cambridge before his stints with the government etc. However, I am sure some no mark on a music forum knows better than he.

It’s this kind of credentialism/scientism that’s naive, Gav. I’m sure King can speak with personal authority within his field. Self-Appointed Sage, though, is an organisation that works by converting credentials within a specialist field into a kind of universal authority, allowing its members to speak In the Name of Science about anything a bit scienc-ey. The results have not been edifying: quite apart from all the absurdly confident and wrong pronouncements on developments outside their fields (Stephen Reicher on the “G7 outbreak” last week, Deepti Gurdasani on vaccine escape), they’ve indulged in conspiracy thinking, smear campaigns against other scientists and hysterical moralism: they’ve really turned public science into a nuance-free, doubt-free slanging match. Now they want to speak for the planet. It’s not a positive development and I hope climate scientists and environmental activists steer well clear.

Interesting article here on the Irish equivalent (Gabriel Scally of ISage UK makes an appearance):

Catalysis is about kinetic models Sean, Covid has been about kinetic models. Funny that. King hand-picked the team and very few others would have been in a position to do so. Science is much broader than you imagine. There are very few niche fields because the remaining problems are just too complex for lone individuals, even national groupings.

I had no idea who David King is, hence why my first thought was what it was. I thought I'd share it to add a bit of levity.

The point is that Made-Up Sage mostly don’t usually speak as a group - they speak as individuals, about stuff they often seem to have a dim understanding of at best, with the spurious authority that membership of the group gives them. It's an awful model for public science and it will for sure help discredit the science around the environmental movement if they're allowed to get a foothold there.

That's quite culty, by the way, the stuff about King. Did you say he was a SWP luminary?

This isn’t true.
I hope that a new strain vaccine won't be just rubber stamped through "its like the old one"
You need to test for reactions with various previous vaccines, previous infections and against a variety of variants.
The last thing you need is some serious allergic reaction or autoimmune response

I really don’t understand the hate towards indie_Sage. I’ve watched most of the videos and they provide a useful fact-based scientific counter-narrative to very obvious government propaganda and shape-shifting revisionism. I certainly place exponentially more weight on i_S than any Tory briefings.

I have from Feb 2020 placed zero weight on the government and not paid even the slightest attention to their rules, regulations etc. I decide if lockdown is appropriate for me, I’m certainly not going to “eat out to help out” or whatever because some lying Tory prick bribes me. They are proven liars. Proven to cause deaths and attempt to cover up their incompetence. Proven to pocket the tax revenue we all pay in good faith for protection in scenarios like this.

As such i_S is a useful information source IMO.

They operate under a written code of conduct that stipulates the coherence of the group. King - SWP? Now you're having a turkish.

i am reading in one or two places that flu might be a bigger problem this coming winter, as there have been few prevalent strains for us to predict what vaccine needs to be made.

They get very quick in vitro neutralisation results which will have some predictive power of in vivo responses from those vaccinated. Its the first early warning sign of outright vaccine escape. After that there’s the substantial wait to get new vaccines ready but at least they can reimplement public health controls in the interim.
