Bristol Hifi Show Feb 2022

How did you show proof out of interest? I noticed sometimes they don't always give you the little card as proof ...
at a recent booster for friend they didn't
Given the formalities I had to comply with late October when coming over from a green list country for a funeral, that lack of proof makes foreign travel pretty difficult... especially the coming back to the UK bit!

My impression of London and the Midlands during that trip was that people do not seem to be taking COVID very seriously in the UK - a lot of staff in shops, stations, trains, restaurants not wearing masks, for example. And a thread elsewhere mentions 10,000 crammed together for a concert about a week ago.

Surely the proof of vaccination is just the ‘vaccine passport’, which is readily available in either electronic or paper form?

The thing I don't quite understand is, you only let in those who are double jabbed... Why? The 'vaccination' doesn't stop us passing it on to other people, so why restrict these events to the double jabbed? Is it to protect the unvaccinated from getting severely ill?

I'm genuinely interested, because at face value, it doesn't seem to make much sense.

Chaps

It will be a total waste of time.

1. The hotel will be stuffed to the gunnels with people wearing masks. Do you really want to risk your health and that of your family.

2. The rooms will be crowded, hardly the best listening situation. Also being nerdy, the electricity will be dirty and the stuff will just sound rubbish. What a total waste of time.

3. The place will be full of nerds asking the same stupid questions to reps who get totally bored to death after the first couple of hours. They want you in and out as fast as possible. This is the time that the sales staff dread. Can you imagine having to answer the same stupid repetitive questions on speaker placement, what sort of stand to use etc, it must be mental torture for the poor sods. You may think the questions are interesting, they don't.

4. The catering standards are rubbish. You will eat like a peasant and pay over the odds for the privilege.

5. Finally your wife/partner is likely to get the hump and will either nag you to death about leaving her alone and probably have it off with the milkman whilst you are indulging in gormless conversations with bored salesmen.

Hifi shows are just plain embarrassing for all concerned.

Regards

Mick

Point 6: similar to point 4. The hifi equipment standards are rubbish. You will pay over the odds for the privilege.

Your impression is accurate, you see it reflected in the daily case numbers in the UK which is consistently high. Numbers are increasing in Europe too, Austria has announced a full lockdown meanwhile the tories are more likely to do a Bolsonaro here in the UK.

If I don’t see clarity of covid precautions I won’t be going. I test often and if I do go to this show I will test the morning I leave home. I will wear a mask regardless of the irresponsible types who do not.

By the way, regards proof of vaccination. My wife had the card to present at the NEC for her proof of vaccination but the info is also available in the NHS app. She tells me today the NEC was also accepting a recent negative PCR test from those not double jabbed, so entry wasn’t entirely restricted to those double-jabbed as I had thought.

As an aside, we went on a cruise last month and needed proof of vaccination AND a negative PCR done within the previous 3 days. I don’t see anything difficult about doing these things. It’s what we need to do to live with the virus. Covid has to be taken seriously, people can’t just ‘not let covid stop them’, behaving as though it doesn’t exist. That is irresponsible but then the UK does have its share of idiots who insist on their ‘right’ to do whatever they like, I daresay even failing to follow such a simple precaution for others as wearing a mask.

I may be wrong but I assume if everyone attending an event is vaccinated, the number of people at the event who actually have covid is likely to be lower?

My wife and I (both double jabbed) caught CV-19 in late summer, so our three kids went down as well - caught it from us, no doubt (our oldest was hospitalized with pneumonia as a result). We are a careful family, although in retrospect, there is always more that could/should be done.

We won't be taking ABCaudio or EWA to a HiFi show just yet, in no way does it feel like a good idea. Just our personal opinion.

That’s useful to know, thanks for sharing and I hope you are all fully recovered.

I won’t be surprised if the event is cancelled as we get into the winter and cases begin to rise further. It does seem like one to avoid by default, hence my question in the OP.

...erm yes: the excellent @stevied also.

tl;dr: Besht show, also we all agreed - last show we'd ever likely try - and without that tedious bother of actually having to attend it at all: Feb 2010, by far.

Indeed - I'm up for it again in Feb if you are :)

My wife and I are triple-jabbed (both in our sixties), and are still sufficiently concerned - rightly or wrongly - that we are giving up our tickets to see Nightwish in December at Wembley.

Needless to say we are really, really PI$$ED OFF!

So wandering around the Marriott with a bunch of middle aged smelly individuals is not on. And yes, I am PI$$ED OFF about that as well!

I also have a ticket (with a group of friends) to see Yes somewhere in Brum, postponed until next June….that’s assuming both me and the group (given that we are all somewhat advanced in years) are actually still alive :D

The best way to make the most of the Bristol Hi-Fi show, in my experience, is to travel to Bristol, meet up with some like-minded audiophiles and you brother if you have one, repair to the Severn Shed (as was) drink their excellent Mojitos/other beverages and indulge in intelligent, witty and stimulating audiophile, philosophical, music and petrolhead conversation until all awareness of the nearby Hi-Fi show anachronism fades. Followed by steak frites and a bottle of red wine.

My sincere thanks to my brother Martin Clark, Robert and other PFM members with whom I shared this sublime experience in years past. The memory of which sustains me on long winter evenings. Cheers guys!

Enjoy!

Did you say Steak Frites? I was considering the show, it's a pretty reasonable train trip from Cardiff, but the covid situation does rather put me off.

I was at the 2020 show and was slightly nervous. I also struggled with getting about due to knackered knees. I was even more nervous on the way home by train..when some woman a couple of seats up from us coughed continuously from Bristol to Brum.
I'm now triple vaccinated... but I'll be 73 by the time of the next show.. and my assorted cardio conditions haven't gone away.
Looking at the stats for 'unfavourable outcomes' for over 60s with Covid..even if vaxxed.. I'll give it a miss.
I never regard shows as anything more than a day out with a bit of specialist socialising thrown in. I certainly wouldn't buy anything on what I heard at a show.
So.. I think I'll get back into going to the local and visiting friends before I get into risky activities such as the Bristol Show.

With manufacturers struggling with component supply I doubt there will be many new launches - at Munich High-End three months later maybe.
