A&E Dilemma.

Mrs L had a very sore and inflamed toe. Within minutes of being triaged by the doctors she had a secure place to upload a picture to, and he rang straight back telling her to go get a prescription, to draw a line in her foot, and if it continued to spread to get to A&E.

You need to get it seen to Colin. ASAP

My wife has had this a couple of times. Once she sat in a meeting and a doctor sitting next to her could see the infection spreading up from her ankle. The meeting was stopped and she was escorted to the Emergency.

Do not delay. Never mind 111. You doubtless know where your A & E is, or minor injuries, Just get in the car and go. They are open for business, there are few patients and you will be seen quickly.
This happened to me in France.
Red line moving up my leg from an ankle wound. Flu symptoms.
Went to see a French doc who gave me strong antibiotics and reckoned if I hadn’t seen him I was less than 24 hours from admission to hospital.

Agree with going straight to A&E.

The medics are very worried about people not to A&E when they should. People are having strokes and heart attacks and not going to hospital!! This is contributing to the current high level of excess deaths.

Going back to the initial incident I would have applied Magnesium Sulphate paste. This helps to draw out the nasties. Definitely worth keeping in the first aid cabinet.

Go to a doctor immediately! This is how people used to die from minor wounds! There is probably something still in there.

Right. Many thanks to all. I called the Docs, who asked me to send a pic. Have just had a response. Doxycycline script sent to pharmacy and an instruction to seek further help if things worsen/don't improve. A neighbour has already volunteered her daughter to pick up my regular scripts for me, so I'll see if she can get this one.

As it happens, I decided to wash the wound with plain soap and water to get off all the Bactroban. Then just dabbed with IPA and left alone. It is already looking much better.

Puncture wounds, particularly gardening related, should always be taken seriously. When was your last tetanus jab? If the wound is getting worse go to A&E or the virtual equivalent.

A&E's are the quietest they've ever been at the moment apparently, so definitely sounds like that's the best option.

I would have made a small incision to let the gunk flush out, then left it undressed, wiping away any excess blood. Maybe that's terrible advice, but at least I've never had to take antibiotics.

In general though, if in any doubt, call 111 or visit the nearest A&E.

daft git...it's got infected. No worries. Just get a real med person to look at it and follow the instructions. Job done.
As to A&E in the time of Corvid 19, have no fear, they have their own entrance. I mean...
well, just go.

If you do have to go to hospital, don't worry too much. An NHS spokesperson on the radio last night said that they are prepared and are safer than supermarkets at present.

The same goes for anyone facing dangerous / life threatening health situations, the risk will outweigh the risk of getting COVID-19 from a necessary hospital or G.P. visit.

My son had to go to A & E at the weekend as he fell off a wall and hurt his rib area and breathing was a getting worse due to the pain and he had to make sure he had not broken a rib . A & E was completely empty and was seen immediately ,it was all set up very well with covid in mind and he was very impressed . He was thoroughly examined and x rayed luckily the ribs were only bruised and he was given strong pain killers and now he has recovered . If you need to go he said he would have no hesitation

Mull, glad to hear you’ve gotten some antibiotics. Am sure you will mend quickly.

But should this happen again, here’s an instructional video that may help.
