80s 12" singles

The Martin Rushent/Human League 12s obviously; and their kinda precursor Pete Shelley - Homosapien.
I'll have a riffle throught the racks later looking for some other ideas

I adore the format and in the last couple of years made up 30 sixty minute cassettes entirely from 12” mixes.

I’ll put up some of my favourites later, there’s gold in them thar grooves.

Oh, Grace Jones - Slave To The Rhythm has to be in there, as well as all the Compass Point 12s

…and their kinda precursor Pete Shelley - Homosapien.

I think it’s ‘I Don’t Know What It Is’ or its B side that has a wonderful deliberate vinyl scratch/skate-sound from the main bit into the instrumental bit. Kind of like they couldn’t figure out how to get from part A to part B so just scraped their way there! Great sounding 12”, must dig it out for a spin.

It’s got a dark label, US-style tip-on sleeve and Atmosphere is actually the B side. Pics in Discogs here. The drums are just insane on it, right in the room with you. Crazy dynamic. The UK copy sounds blunted in comparison which is really surprising as IIRC it’s a Porky cut. For some reason the US copy pre-existed the UK copy, I remember it being around but being very hard to get hold of. I eventually found a copy second hand years later.

PS Same thing with New Order’s Ceremony, though that has two different mixes not just mastering. If you’ve only heard the one with the blue and cream sleeve you’ve just not heard it. The original mix in the green sleeve packs a hell of a punch.

The mix on Substance is the less good one.

Cheers Tony, I've got both versions of Ceremony and you're right, the green sleeve version is epic. Thanks for the info on Atmosphere I will look out for it.

Love And Rockets: No New Tale to Tell.
The Stranglers: The Skin Deep.
Dr Calculus: Perfume from Spain, inversion..
The Stone Roses: I wanna be Adored.
Ledernacken: Amok -original 83' version.
Peter Gabriel: BIKO.
The Smiths: Sheila take a Bow. ..."How Soon is Now" was already posted but needs mentioning twice IMO.

Are a few of my personal 12" favs that I didn't see already posted.

For twelves that are quite different to the album versions:

New Order - Shellshock (edited for "Substance")
Duran Duran - Planet Earth (Night Version)
Kraftwerk - The Telephone Call ("House Phone" version)
Timezone - World Destruction
The Mission - Tower of Stength (Bombay Mix)
All About Eve - Every Angel
The Chameleons - Tears
Tangerine Dream - Warsaw in the Sun
Tangerine Dream - Streethawk

I recommend the "So80s" series by Blank and Jones which are jam packed with 12" mixes.

It took a long time to hear the original - when I got the box of "Movement" although it had been on the "Total" compilation as well.

I think the 4 x LP singles boxset has that version as well

Just looked on Discogs and was surprised how much the boxset is "fetching"!!!

Probably cheaper than trying to get the original 12s now?

I'll have a dig through mine tomorrow

One that does spring to mind though is

Swansway - Soul train

great tune

Wow, not heard that for decades. Don’t have the 12” but know the tune. Will have to scan youtube for that to hear it tomorrow.

Yazoo - Situation

I still remember buying Only You on 7” and finding Situation on the B-Side. It was played a lot in the nite club I used to go to on the Isle O Wight in 1982 (Zanies in Sandown)

The 12” version is a fantastic dance tune. I only have the 7” with Situation on the B-Side. Killer, must find that out .

Visage - Fade to Grey

Interesting you should post this as I have the 12" of Fade to Grey bought all the way back on initial release and it's the same version as the 7" yet I keep seeing and hearing an extended mix called the 12" version, but when was it released and on what formats?
