80s 12" singles

I've got the yellow 12 and the ordinary black
vinyl 12 with insert - Fabulous and the definitive version.

Have they got a ‘track gap’ mid-way through the mix for no understandable reason? Mine is a white label test pressing and it has, but you’d never notice it, the track itself plays without a gap.

PS I really like the 7” mix of this one, it sounds so complete. Annoyingly it is in the flight-case I use as a TV stand so, like the rest of my 7” singles, I’ve not heard it for years!

Yes Tony on both black and yellow versions....I thought it strange at the time.
From memory, its just as the 'ball bearing down a metal pipe weird marimba' extended solo kicks in that the stylus tracks the gap.

Link of my yellow 12".....You can make out the gap if you scroll in;-

Being born towards the end of '89 I don't have all that many 80's 12", not many singles at all to be honest.

The only strong contender I have is The Damned - Eloise, somehow even more theatrical than the other version! Which is great.

B-Movie - Nowhere Girl is a belter!

Yazoo - Situation

Visage - Fade To Grey

All essential! Just found this thread. I have loads of 12" singles from the 80's, all purchased new! Every now and then i grab a few and play them, and most have excellent dynamics. I'll see what i can dig out from my collection that has not been previously mentioned?

Has Two Tribes by FGTH been mentioned?

I have a limited edition pressing of Love in Itself by DM, that has a brill version of Photographic on the other side... That was flogged to death. I'd also add most of the DM 12" that I I have from that decade always had interesting tracks on their b sides.

I’d throw in a heap of DAF’s Der Mussolini.

PS I played the Pete Shelley I Don’t Know What It Is 12” I mentioned upthread and it is definitely the flip-side that needs listening to, not the A, which is certainly avoidable. 8+ minutes of Martin Rushent at his finest (Discogs). Worth finding for those who like Rushent’s stretched-out Dare-era Human League stuff.

Cheers Tony, another solid recommendation. My new FACUS2 US 12" of Atmosphere arrived on Friday (your recommendation again) and you are right about how massively good it sounds compared to the UK version... so many thanks for that.

I’d throw in a heap of Pet Shop Boys…

Yep, they have some amazingly good 12" mixes.... It's a Sin, What Have I Done To Deserve This, It's Alright, Was it Worth it, Left To My Own Devices, Jealousy, West End Girls and their best ever... Suburbia - The Full Horror Mix. Sadly they also have Where The Streets Have No Name.... not good on any level :(

A few more from me

World Party - Ship of Fools

(Pete) Shelley - Never Again

Joe Strummer - Love Kills

bit confused, is this for records recorded and first issued in the 80's or any released in this decade?

Which version? ;-)

All DM 12s are worth having as they're usually different mixes and / or have excellent non-album B-sides.

You'll never beat the version of 'Photographic' they cut for Some Bizarre, though.

It was my intention with the thread that it should be for 1980s 12” singles that feature mixes where the original song is preserved but enhanced. However a bit of thread creep is ok in my book so no worries :)
