I’ve had a bit of a ‘bump’ at work, so, obviously, my first thoughts are to treat myself to a bottle of something nice. I’d like an age statement, say 18 years, ex bourbon casks or part sherry (but not a sherry monster), nothing too peaty. Something complex. Up to £125-ish. Front runners are Arran 18 and Arran 21. Not my usual price range so any advice welcomed. Slainte.

Personally I'd not go too OTT with the age statement; but do understand wanting to treat yourself ;) :D

These would be my choices:

Glenrothes: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07H9WRMFV/?tag=pinkfishmedia-21

Glendronach: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002V98VRM/?tag=pinkfishmedia-21

Glenmorangie: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003ZIOR9Y/?tag=pinkfishmedia-21

Bunnahabhain: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008CYY3BS/?tag=pinkfishmedia-21

Glenlivet: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003ZIOXX4/?tag=pinkfishmedia-21

Not an 18YO but a very interesting drm: Dalmore Cigar Reserve: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007R2JY9M/?tag=pinkfishmedia-21

Again not an 18; but 2 bottles that fit into your budget (nearly) ;) Edradour: https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/p/58155/edradour-2010-10-year-old-sherry-butt and https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/p/10992/edradour-12-year-old-caledonia-selection-sherry-cask

Under budget, not 18 but supposedly a superb dram: https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/p/60492/mortlach-2010-11-year-old-sherry-cask-signatory

Thanks for suggestions above, some interesting bottles to investigate. However, I've now gone in a completely different direction and treated myself to a bourbon - Elijah Craig 12 Year Barrel Proof (65.7% batch)

At the risk of sounding naive, I'd always assumed that the dilution of Scotch whisky from the cask was done using the local water - after all, a lot is made in the marketing spiel about the provenance of the water supply, with its gently flowing burns and picturesque lochs.

However, although local water is used during the whisky making process (mashing, cooling) the dilution of the spirit from cask strength to presented abv is actually done during the bottling process, most of which takes place in bottling plants in central Scotland using the commercial domestic water supply. Not quite as romantic an image is it..?

You'll be telling me there's no Santa Claus next.

Notable exceptions....Bruichladdich and Springbank, who both bottle on site.
