Whisky II

They've got some good offers on there. Benriach, Arran and others... And an Octomore at the cheapest I have seen for one of theirs for a while ( still crazy money though!).

Just over £100 is very cheap for an Octomore - I'd be tempted if I didn't already have one.

Neck pour.
Coming from the standard 12 to the cask strength Bunna is a little bit of a disappointment. I was expecting a sherry cask bomb. Not so. Different cask make up or more refills? Maybe it will open up.
A bit annoyed that it was £81 from the distillery and is £70 on the Whisky Exchange.
You live and learn.
Hopefully it will open up for you, it’s a dense spirit. I’m really enjoying it. Not sure why you were expecting a sherry bomb though. And to be fair the price difference you quoted includes delivery from the distillery but not from WE. But...arguably not worth the price difference from the standard 12.

Really enjoying the Eagle Rare at the moment.

I haven't found a more enjoyable American whiskey at any price (yet.)
It’s a great bourbon, and good value considering the age statement. I think Four Roses Small Batch would be worth trying, or even better, the Single Barrel versions. WT Rare Breed is a significant step up though, imho.

The standard 12 is sherry forward so I was imagining it would be at least as much so. It's less so for me. No logic there obviously!**
Yes you're right about delivery from WE. You'd think it might be cheaper direct from the distillery...it doesn't often seem to work like that and Bunnahabhain are not alone in that. I'll be less keen taking them up on email "exclusive" solicitations in future.
Will be giving it another go next weekend.

**Edit: knew I'd read it somewhere:
"Bottled at cask strength, we asked Brendan McCarron, Master Distiller what the inspiration behind Cask Strength is:
“Not all whiskies work at cask strength and many whiskies don’t stand up to full maturation in sherry casks."

I find the sherry very subtle in the 12, it’s more pronounced in the stiuireadair. Ah, interesting quote from Brendan, the standard 12 is matured in both bourbon and sherry casks isn’t it? So the CS is a different beast then...rather misleading

Yeah and so I assumed the CS would be more sherried...ah well...have an unopened bottle of "stewie"...maybe I should have a mixing sesh.

Another view on the Bunna 12 CS here:

"Worth noting for those that love sherry that from the taste and colour these were refill sherry casks".
That's my problem with it expectation wise compared with the standard 12 which I'm pretty sure has more first fill. And a suspicion that they've been using a load of cheap refill casks and really boosting the bottom line.

@Weekender and @Cambs12 I don’t often buy whisky, but looked in here for some inspiration for Christmas - thank you very much for the link and the reference to Octomore, I wouldn’t have followed the link if not for the mention.
The Octomore should arrive tomorrow (very decent price) along with a bottle of 18yr Ledaig. I was given the 12yr old last year, and there’s a bit left to compare the two. I’m really curious to see what they’re like side by side.

I remember watching that on transmission having been a fan of Fonejacker. Had zero interest in whisky...imagine all the Springbank I could've bought...

Just got round to watching this and noticed there are two casks of Malt Mill at 4:10 in. Wonder where they went...into a blend no doubt.
According to this: https://www.islay.blog/article.php/1965-islay-video-islay-whisky-island
the film is from 1965 and so Malt Mill would already be closed. I'm not sure...it may be earlier.
Edit: 1963 here:

Malt Mill had a colourful history: https://scotchwhisky.com/whiskypedia/4325/malt-mill/
and was the "mythical cask" in Ken Loach's Angel Share.
There was nothing particularly special about Malt Mill in its day as it was merely Lagavulin's attempt at a copy of Laphroaig but its complete extinction has given it a mystique.

The distillery manager is Bessie Williamson (Campbell by marriage) of Laphroaig:
