Takeaways

I get this, my solution is to cook in advance and fridge it. Come in, Tupperware out of the fridge and in the kitchen TV, frozen veg in boiling water for 5 min, dinner is served. Easier than phoning up. This is a regular event when I'm away all week and walking in at 7 or 8 on a Friday after God knows how long on the A1 or M1.

Similar sort of thing here but I batch cook in the slow cooker over the weekend and fill the freezer up with meals. Then just take one out the night before and put it in the fridge ready for next day's tea.

I have never had one of those takeaways where they deliver cooked food to your house. I get loads of flyers through the door advertising them but the garish pictures put me off. They mostly look like an invitation to obesity, clogged arteries and a heart attack.

And in tubs and bagged...handled on packing and needing handling to get the cooked food on plates.

We have had one takeaway since Covid-19 kicked off, and my wife went through a real performance in spooning the food out of the containers onto plates so what was outside never touched the food. Just in case. Normally, we'd just take the lids off and pour. That kind of extra performance takes away some of the usual convenience aspect of it.

I'm torn here. On the one hand, I don't like doing anything avoidable that could increase the chances of virus transmission. On the other, the businesses that supply the food have been going for many years, they are part of our community, and if we don't support them now then they may not survive this.

Kind regards

- Garry

Apologies, I'm late to this thread but I'm amazed at the rubbish people eat. It seems almost impossible to get decent food at so-called restaurants or cafes. Look round the back of all the major chains and it's all pre-prepped in huge tubs from Brakes. I'll have a Chinese take-away about twice a year and I might have a McDonalds in desperation if I'm properly hungry about twice a year. Otherwise it's all cooked at home or if you're near Saffron Walden then Kim's tea shop does the best tea, coffee and sandwiches ever. Hopefully won't have gone to the wall with CV. And the owner is good for amusement - Basil Fawlty reinvented. Check out his responses to criticism on Trip Advisor. Priceless.

Of course. The tubs are at a temperature to kill viruses. Not good enough for you? So go to the supermarket instead. Roll the dice.

If you collect your takeaway, either at their premises or from your door, while wearing, for example, nitrile gloves, I really can’t see the problem. The Indian I’m having tonight will kill that virus with temperature and spice :)

We have a Chinese about once every 6 weeks. Our local takeaway is excellent and run by a lovely family. We have used it for over 10 years. They closed for a monthe and have recently re-opened with distancing measures. People are still using it but at 60% of "normal". There are many more poor take-aways than good ones, but once you found a good one it should be treasured.

I would love a chippy tea, and our fantastic local chip shop is half a mile away.

We often have just a battered fish each, they fill the plate.

The chippy has just started doing deliveries again, thank cod for that.

As for folks eating takeaways frequently. I would be ashamed of my kids if they lived off takeaways, all three of them are good cooks. I would also think they were weird if they didn't eat out, or have a takeaway now and again.
The 'time-poor' excuse for having frequent take-outs is rubbish, as someone said upthread.

I will eat one burger king whopper burger about once every 3 months, if that. I never have fries or a drink. Mein Schatz will eat a big mac meal, aboot the same frequency as my guilt-burger.

Deliveroo gave me a 50% off voucher last weekend so I had no choice but to have my first take away of the year, but that's due to my new fitness regime rather than CV. I was averaging five a week towards the end of last year!

I can cook most foods better so the only take away I really go for is charcoal grilled kebab or the very occasional chips & gravy. Maybe a curry once a year for convenience.

Indian and Chinese takeaways are not the most hygienic of places at any time let alone now. I dont suppose they practice safe distancing if they are not in the same family and the kitchens tend to be quiet small. Dont suppose they quarantine food that has been delivered.

On another note our neighbor have a Dominos at least once a week, usually a couple of pizza's and sides/drinks. Must cost them at least £30-40. Pizza is only a fiver in the shops.

Each and every takeaway I’ve used in the last twenty years has had at least four out of five stars for hygiene.
Once customers fall ill, that’s the end of their business, if that’s how they want to operate. I don’t live in Wuhan, after all.

You might want to try to navigate the Domino’s website. You’ll see that two big pizzas and a few bits can be had for way less than £30. And no, I don’t use them!

Not had a carry out in yonks ( ages ) there is a shop here called Three In One. I'm going to order a chicken tika kebab. Marinated chicken cooked on a BBQ then put in there in house made bread with salad and chilli sauce. It's a treat I'm going to have.

Once in a blue moon I might order a dominos if I am particularly lazy. I cook most nights...for myself....and my pensioner mother if she is hungry (so thats every night) and calls over. If it can't be made from scratch and on the table in 20 or so I am not really interested.
