Royd Audio

You may or may not have been expecting a fission of scepticism , but as you have purchased the Royd name , you must surely have known of the history and of the favourable following .

So far , the only continuity I can establish from this thread with you and Royd is that you wish to produce a good sounding speaker [ an aim of all manufacturers surely ? ] and a two way design with a 5" driver .

Royds had distinctive approach to speaker design : paper cone's damped , tuning by ear not measurement . minimal x-overs , doping as opposed to passive electronic filters , mass damped cabinets etc .

Are any what can be called "royd features" to be retained and if so what ?

I for one await developments here with interest. My A7 mkIIs are still making wonderful music after many years. Hope you can make something on a par.

They did indeed and these were a means to an end. If any of these methods make an improvement to the overall reproduction in sound then they will be upheld, but not just for the sake of it. I do have an outline understanding of Royd and of Joe's approach, one where any changes were only included if they had a measurable improvement upon the sound. The same philosophy applies to our approach which will favour simple, measurable changes to work towards balancing a cost effective and capable loudspeaker. I don't anticipate universal acceptance and I am trying to be sensitive to those who cherish their speakers and what Royd stood for while bringing the brand up to date.

I'm one of the biggest Royd fans, across the pond in Canada. In addition to creating the final website for Royd before Joe's retirement, I still own the roydaudio.com domain. ;) (Yes, I'm willing to arrange for transfer of the domain.)

I've owned the RR3, Albion, Minstrel SE, Sintra, Merlin, Squire, A7, A7X, AV77, and likely more that I can't recall. They were all great speakers!

Coincidentally, one of my RR3's has caught a cold that's proving devilishly difficult to cure. It's too bad you won't be repairing the old models.

Good luck on your new endeavour. Please contact me via [email protected] regarding the domain transfer.

Hi Mike

Coincidentally a friend was discussing how large a following Royd had in Canada!

I'll be in touch shortly.

Hi Indy - it's the one we're testing at the moment. I should have an announcement at the end of the month with more details.

Good luck Adam.

What sales channels will you use - online, specialist hifi retailers, Currys?

:)

I dropped in for a quick cuppa at Adam's today and got a little more than I bargained for! He had the new Royd loudspeakers on test so I was able to sit down and listen, not only that, but A - B them to a pair of original Minstrels.

From the first track of the XX these little things had something quite special!

We moved them around the room, even very close together either side of the fire place and right back up to the wall which had little effect on the overall sound, showing they are reasonably unaffected by placement.

When testing back to back with the Minstrels I did think they lacked a bit of punch but Adam swapped them over, ports firing out, not toward each other and there was an immediate change in attack and punch, easily as good as the Minstrels.

I'd say where they excel and beat the Minstrels is with the tweeter. It's incredibly detailed and layered but not shouty, makes a very wide and tall sound stage.

If I hadn't got rid of the Nait and gone active I'd probably have a pair of these myself!

Good luck Adam and thanks for the demo!

So.... How much are the minstrel equivalents going to be? Enquiring minds want to know :)

If you pop across to the website and sign up to the news letter you'll get to know straight away when we announce official pricing.

Cheers
