Rega P6 with Neo power supply and Exact MM cartridge for £800 from eBay. The difference will buy a decent phono stage.

otherwise, the all in one Techincs option is hard to beat for sound per pound or ease of use.

I have a technics 1500c in black and love it. I have change the cart to one of the Hana carts but I don't think the red was overly bad. swapping the stylis to the blue is well worth it. Phono is in built like mentioned before and fine for this level of Cart.

few options on here for under your budget.

I assume he has a decent collection of records, Ian; otherwise he's on a hell of a journey ! Add also a decent deck support, ph/stage, cart. (mm) and various vinyl fettling accoutrements. Being British, N.A.(Nottingham) should be considered as bombproof and good; also available used for best value.

Reminds me of the Irishman responding to the tourist's request for directions; 'I wouldn't go from here'. However, he has good kit which needs more sources; tuner anyone? CD maybe? ;)

I would suggest a Technics 1210 mk7 or a Technics 1500 in black. And would chose depending on style preference at this point: simple and elegant or more knobs and dials.

Rega also a fine choice but I think Technics decks have great isolation and a better chance of just being plonked down and playing really well. I’d be interested to know whether others with more experience with Rega would agree?

I bought a Cambridge Audio Alva ST recently reduced by £350. It’s better built than the Regas and has an in built phono stage and AT cart. I upgraded the cart recently and it is a very nice deck. Having heard the 1500c( I bought one one for my FIL) the Alva is at least as good and a bargain at its current price. Might be worth a listen? I now play it through an Ifi phono stage and it does sound impressive.

The OP did say the phono stage could be extra. Carts can start at £50 but you'd sensibly spend a bit more.

I’d agree with that, I wouldn’t want to use a Rega without a wall bracket or solid floor
whereas the Technics can be used anywhere ime.
There’s a GR in the classifieds under OP budget.

I looked at a used WT deck, can't remember the model, a while back in a dealer. The ergononics are poor, the build looks cheap close up and the gloop pot fills up with dust and general grot because there is no dust cover. It looks like a well executed 6th form CDT project, but not a £1000 deck. Sorry. The one I looked at was half that, and it looked cheap then. They do *sound* great.

Really? These days £1k is pretty much entry level + I'd have thought. An RP3 is over £600 new!

You can't have it all for the money but given the system it's going in SQ needs to be pretty far up the list of wants, and a second rate TT in that regard is really not going to do it.

This one does have quite a nice cover which would have cost a fair bit new.

You pay your money and take your choice I guess but I don't think you'll get a better sound for the money.

More solid build and pretty looking engineering with flashing strobes - maybe. That would be the technics.

More conventional and less gloopy - the Regas

Interestingly there's a really decent condition Manticore Mantra in classifieds today. Well under budget but possibly worth a look!

Ive just had this dilemma. Wanted a new deck for the kitchen / diner system. Needed to be robust, fuss free, easy to use, and something my wife wouldn't find intimidating to use (she is afraid to use my notts analogue in the living room). So we bought a technics 1210 GR. Built to last and easy to use.

Scoured Ebay for the best £1000 TT

This is it!

Sounds good, looks good, modern design, what's not to like?

I only once, ages ago, saw WT in person.
I always assumed there was some ultra-intelligent engineering solution or some magic to making a nice smooth belt out of the string/cord/thread on these decks. Now I see on the pic in eBay link, that they just tied a knot! Is that it?

One of the new Duals.
This. Very much this. Heard the entry level one see off a Rega 3 recently, and the slightly more expensive one was just so much fun, and so musical. Those are around £5-600, including a 2M red cart. If it were me, I'd go for the direct drive CS618 at pretty much the top end of the budget with a 2M Blue included, it's giving a lot of pretty high end 'tables a run for their money, I'd take it over a Rega 8.
