Killing field day this Saturday

I agree that the courses have become safer for rider and horses, it is what happens to the ones that do not make the grade and ones who retire. I am sure the majority do not find a retirement home and the majority are sent for butchering.
There are many organisations out there for re-homing race horses, I know all the horses owned in the syndicate I was with have re-homed every horse. A small percentage of the subs went into a pot just for this.
I've heard stories about horses sent to France for butchering, I'm sure it still happens, but what of it. Are you a meat eater, again think how many animals are slaughtered for food everyday. Racehorses will have enjoyed a far better life than animals bred for humans to eat.

BHA changed the rules a few years ago to stop horses being sent to slaughter.

For myself, yes I realise (other) people eat meat and you could ask why a racehorse is different. But I wouldn't want the last moments of a loved one's life to be spent queuing up in an abattoir, terrified, waiting to have a bolt put through their brain.

Since giving up horse racing I have missed our acquaintances as we used to attend several events, but for me it had to go. so no more gambling on the gee gees or viewing them.

I do not eat red meat and certain species of fish, if I cannot kill it I will not eat it, simple as that.

if I cannot kill it I will not eat

Will the event still have loads of tarpaulins available now the field is reduced and the course is safer for the time the unfortunate may happen , Quick cover it up from public eye , Nothing to see here , Move on and race around it :(
I will not see this but do hope those that will have a good day , I eat very little meat and when I do sometimes can't finish it 🤢, getting my teeth into a dead corps is not appealing at all for me , Nice plate of veg or salad is the way to go , and it makes me go more regularly, High fibre :)

Why send them to France? It won't be to become part of the supply chain for human consumption, that's certain. The horses that humans eat in France are specifically bred for that purpose, just like chickens in the UK there is a food supply chain that is specifically for "fit for human consumption" horses. An ex race horse would not meet those requirements (I don't believe). So I suspect it's highly unlikely that any racehorse ended up in France to be butchered would end up on somebodies plate. At least not legally.

"The channel ensures strict compliance with French and European regulations, be it in terms of traceability, health safety or respect for the animal’s well-being.

As is emphasised by the CIV (Centre d’Information des Viandes/Meat Information Centre) in a press release, the horse meat channel, just like other animal channels, is subject to strict European regulations in terms of breeding practices, transport of animals, slaughter, and the commercialisation of the meat.

Each foal is registered at birth, and an electronic chip the size of a grain of rice inserted into its neck.

Horses that are raised for the meat market are subjected to very strict standards of traceability and follow-up in terms of medical treatment.

On French territory, all owners can make the choice that their horses can never been slaughtered for food. This information is included in the medical treatment file that is part of the horse’s passport. This decision is a final one."

Greyhound racing really should be banned. The industry has shown itself, time and again, incapable of enforcing even the most basic levels humane treatment of what are relatively sentient and trusting creatures. It's a bloody disgrace.
I adore greyhounds. I can't pass one in the street without going soppy...

Looks like you've got your first fatality under your belts.

How completely unexpected.

Well done.

They are wonderful creatures. Often dismissed as stupid, they’re really just lazy and relatively untrainable, which only endears them to me more. I’m a bit torn on the whole notion of pets and companion animals, but as long as abandoned Greyhounds need somewhere to live and a smelly old Chesterfield to sleep on, our family will welcome them.

Some data :-

46 this year already, on average over 120 a year since they started collecting info. in 2007. 70 have been at Aintree in that period.

If you want racing then remove the obstacles and it will be considerably safer. You can still bet on flat racing if you wish.

I've had horses in my life for some decades and they don't jump for fun or else every paddock would need 8' deer fencing, so basically you have a flight animal that has to be trained to do it. Looks like over 120 a year don't make the grade.

Jockeys ? A few of those have died in the UK as well let alone the ones who have falls that end their careers; that happened to a GN winner near me in the recent past.

This is a classic case of moaners just moan. Miserable buggers who want everything their way. Millions of people follow horse racing (I have an annual bet on the GN every year) and only a handful of noisy protesters want everyone to do what they want.

Clearly having an annual bet on the GN allows you to view unnecessary death differently to some of us.

I have just returned home by driving in a car, people die in car crashes but I see no reason to ban them. Horse racing is safer now than ever before and gives millions an awful lot of pressure.

It is never going to be banned in a million years.

A Liverpudlian businessman today complained to GB News about the downturn in his profits due to what he described as “the namby-pamby, wokerati”. “I used to have a great business taking away and rendering down all them horses that died at Aintee every race”, said Sid Knacker of 'Knacker, Knacker and D'Eath', But due to so-called 'better safety measures' I only get a few corpses a week that I can chainsaw the legs off and sell as glue to the local primary school. It's a disgrace !”.

Knacker showed us round the back his 14-bed mansion as he bemoaned the loss of employment “I used to have a dozen lads in there”, pointing at the meat hooks and bone crushers, “But now they're down-and-outs working for them ex-MPs in the Wirral; great shame”. With almost a tear in his year Knacker, standing on a visibly blood-stained floor, said “I remember the blood and gristle flowing down them gutters......................(continues Page94)...............
