Are you a female vocalist fan and if so who are your top five solo female singers and your one favourite album by them???

Mine are...

1, Jennifer Warnes, 'The Well' 45rpm vinyl boxset.

Ella Fitzgerald - most of it, I like her Louis Armstrong collaborations

Karen Carpenter - '_______'

This is a re-run of a similar recent thread where everyone agreed with me that Aretha is the greatest ever and the only choice is who comes second.

Suggestion: maybe someone should start a thread for male singers to find out who comes second to Van Morrison. Just a thought.

It's not who's the best, It is who is your in your top five favourites.

I will take the question rather literally and look for aesthetic and technical prowess ... just off the top of my head and in no particular order ...

Marianne Faithfull

Diamanda Galas

Lisa Garrard from Dead Can Dance and Elisabeth Fraser from Cocteau Twins(I sort of lump them together somehow though generally different)

Mary Weiss of the Shangri-Las

Emmylou Harris

honourable mention also going to: Carmel, Mari Boine, Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star, Tori Amos

That Amy Winehouse half speed mastered is excellent, the bonus album with it is fab as well.

These are closest to my heart, but there are many more. Female singers are a favourite musical genre and I have playlists of them. I find greater emotional honesty in women singers.

Cesaria Evora - her hard life radiates from every song
Aretha - too great for words
Nina Simone - single-minded intensity
Billie Holiday - often happy and sad at the same time
Ella - perfection that swings.

Hard to pick just five.

Ella Fitzgerald
Alison Krauss
Joni Mitchell
Aimee Mann
Mary Chapin Carpenter
