Mmm

My choices are for those whose music I’ve repeatedly gone back to over the years(including their involvement in various bands/projects)
Alison Moyet - Upstairs At Eric’s is a top ten album on my list
Ella - just cos it’s her
Heather Nova - something different
Annie Lennox - again from the 80’s especially the 1st two Eurythmics releases
Suzanne Vega - Solitude Standing in particular

I love female vocals, so could have listed loads more. Depends what mood I’m in.

Joni Mitchell - Hejira
Rickie Lee Jones - The Magazine
Bjork - Vespertine
Nina Simone - It Is Finished
Aretha Franklin - Spirit In The Dark

Wot? Two pages and no Gillian Welch, Kirsty MacColl or Carole King yet.

1. Gillian Welch
2. Kirsty MacColl
3. Carole King
4. Amy Winehouse
5. Nanci Griffith

Ok, I had to have a good look through my collection, and found that I owned surprisingly little, however in order:

i) Timi Yuro - any of her early 60s recordings (Never heard of her? Neither had I until about 5/6 years ago, but believe me I reckon that she is head and shoulders above anyone else - she is hard to describe in terms of genre but interestingly Elvis apparently referred to her as his favourite female vocalist, though don't let that put you off).

ii) Melody Gardot [My one and only Thrill]

iii) Dusty Springfield [Dusty in Memphis]

iv) Sade [Diamond Life]

v) Janis Joplin [Cheap Thrills]

I am slightly surprised at the lack of soul singers, Aretha excepted.

Wot, no mention of Eva Cassidy?

Have a listen to her album "Just Eva" which features just her acoustic guitar, and what is probably one of the purest female singing voices ever.

Elizabeth Fraser - Teardrop
Jo Ann Kelly - Do It
PJ Harvey - Let England Shake
Kate Bush - Aerial
Nanci Griffith - There's a light beyond these woods
