Whats your most valuable LP ?

The Nick Drake albums have been widely pirated even with fake Island labels over the past couple of decades.

I’ve got quite a few wideband Decca SLXs that I bought used when I used to go to Gibbs in Manchester every weekend.

I guess my most valuable recording is an original 4 LP set of Ravel orchestral music conducted by Cluytens on Columbia.

most of the SXLs are not high value, even wide band Ed 1.
but the rarer ones can be.:)

others of potential high value to look out for are;

ASD the so called "gold/cream label"
which looks like this

Or Columbia SAX. the so called "blue/silver " label,
which looks like this.

I have mentioned this before on PFM but the cheapest way to get really good and relatively early pressings of Nick Drake is the first Island Fruit Tree set. I have first pressings, and this set, and its just as good PLUS it has the four completed songs that later appeared on other albums added onto Pink Moon. This makes it a unique, and in my opinion, the best version of Pink Moon.

Cheapest UK seller is £110. Ebay might be better bet. Could pick up the Simply Vinyl or Back to Black reissues cheaper but they do not inc. the four last songs. SQ is middling but acceptable.

Here's a snap of the label...

It's ages since I played any of the LPs in the set, but my memory is that the surfaces etc were very quiet.

I also picked up the same set on 2 CDs for a song...

...now out of print and only available from 3rd party sellers.

But only if

a. I sell it
b. Whoever wins the auction pays for it

I think I may have some more on the same label - I need to check. I'm pretty sure I've got some of the gold and cream ones too - again I need to check.

There was one from a German seller that was about £70-80 that looked good. I have the Simply Vinyl copy of Bryter Layter and its not as good as the first Fruit Tree copy. The original Island Fruit Tree is a very good pressing and has good dynamics. Its a lovely set with an interesting set of inner sleeves and a great booklet plus the unique Pink Moon. Despite the attention Nick Drake gets these days, the Island Fruit Tree set still seems to slip under the radar.

Missed that German seller...wonder what postage is...

Edit: Looks like €9.99 for postage.
Ordered it.

Thanks Snufkin.

Reggae dub album from the 1970s called Concrete Dub , only a few hundred pressed and seen going for many hundreds of pounds !

Yes, I agree that is the problem.

I have some high value classical stuff, but I wouldnt have a clue how or who to sell it to.

That also applies to me, as it seems that there's so much that could go wrong with selling pricey vinyl through Ebay or whatever. Even tried a local store, who seemed interested enough to want full pic's etc. but never got a response. Again, a few years back via here (I think), copious descriptions/pic's/email exchanges but it didn't even reach price discussion.

Yes, maybe, but note that the Ebay copy was pristine having only been played once. In order that we don't mislead people into thinking their LPs are worth more than they actually are then remember to divide this £2k figure by up to 10 or more for marked copies and even then no guarantees as the very few serious collectors out there probably have a marked or inferior copy and are only wanting to upgrade. Once the serious collector has got his copy then that is one buyer less. Ebay, Popsike and Discog websites are only an approx. guide and selling, notwithstanding the fees incurred, is not as easy as people persume. Variance in prices obtained is also massive and like anything else LPs, artists, recording labels, etc come and go out of fashion. At present original LPs on the Vertigo label are commanding premium prices even though in most cases the music contained thereon is absolute pretentious shite. So this is an example of people collecting for what I consider is the wrong reason and runs the risk of falling apart. Some say 'but it is very rare'; I say 'quite rightly so'. I have a near mint ED1 copy of Leonid Kogan's Beethoven Violin Concerto on Columbia (SAX 2386) which has previously sold on Ebay for $10,000; presently a near mint copy can be bought on Ebay for £2700 ie 60% less. It does not always follow that by hanging on to LPs then they will increase in value. As many people have previously stated the value of anything is simply what people are prepared to pay combined with what you are prepared to accept.

Roger Waters Amused to Death ( sealed ) Pink Floyd Pulse and Echoes ( sealed ) Lots of Porcupine Tree , some MFSL of Led Zeppelin , Pink Floyd , Marvin Gaye , Aimme Mann . Some CLASSIC and Analogue Production issues

I know that Cole's Corner by Richard Hawley goes for quire a bit but other than than I've never bothered to look as i won't be selling.

I imagine Harvest Moon by Neil Young goes for quite a bit because I've never seen one I can afford.

Cheers BB

My most valuable vinyl is the one that gives me the greatest listening pleasure.
