Big Joe Williams

- Piney Woods Blues (Delmark #602)
- Nine String Guitar Blues (Delmark #627)
- Blues on Highway 49 (Delmark #604)

I first heard about Big Joe years ago from a fellow who worked in a music store. I bought a few cds, and was soon a huge fan. The thing about Big Joe is that he’s the real deal. He rambled around the US, playing gigs then moving on, always leaving folks talking about what they had just seen. His voice is full of feeling, and he uses it for maximum effect. He plays a 9 string guitar that he made by adding an extra flange and three machine heads. His rambling ways gave him a sense of mystique, in that nobody seemed to know where he might show up next.
He showed up in Chicago around 1965, and was recorded numerous times by Delmark Records in reasonably good sound. The recordings are important in a historical sense because they capture a great bluesman who still played in the same style as he always had played. Top notch Delta blues…
