Time for a motorbike list

I don't want to spend more than I have to but Super UL isn't that much more over a year given your fixed costs. A lot of bikers run SUL anyway don't they? I'm looking for a solution, after all. Is there anywhere you can't get E5 or SUL? There are also the additive things to keep the seals good if using E10. Of course they aren't for nothing either but it's no different from the guys with old classics and soft valve seats having to add lead substitute to UL when 4* was withdrawn.

well another post from the same group mentioned having problems finding E5 in the back of beyond at numerous garages. This was for a Honda. I am not sure it is the plastics as I mentioned above the Amercian version could use up to 10% Ethanol ie E10 ( the USA have had Ethanol petrol for yonks) . I doubt the carbs were radically different to the Uk version? Why Suzuki UK were adamant I dont know but I wasnt going to risk getting a problem bike when I can get a low mileage Yamaha 900s Diversion that will run E10 fine. The two bikes are similar size and weight, 60hp vs 90 hp

Yamaha YBX100 - 1st bike
Yamaha RD250
Kawasaki ZX6R
Kawasaki ZX9R
Honda 954 Fireblade - loved it
Honda VFR800 VTEC - hated it
Honda 954 Fireblade
circa 10 year break following 1 too many close calls with an idiot in a car who didn’t know what mirrors are!
Honda 1200 Crosstourer DCT
Honda 954 Fireblade (for nostalgic reasons and a keeper)

Soon will hopefully add my first ever cruiser, Honda Valkyrie F6C.

I thought of getting a low mileage Honda 1200 Crosstourer but changed my mind when I saw the insurance for London. £800. tpft

It's true, even in London not all petrol stations supply super unleaded (i.e. E5)

That's a bit of a pain for older machinery, especially bikes that do fewer miles and often live indoors so they last longer.
To be clear, the situation isn't bad, probably a good 80-90% do have E5. Just it's not 100%, at least not IME (which of course doesn't cover the whole of London). That said, in the last 20 years, if my area (call it everything within a 2-3 mile radius of home) is anything to go by, over 70% of the petrol stations have closed, so there are far fewer than there used to be.

it would be interresting to hear from people and whether their bike will run on E10. I was a bit shocked as I thought that petrol was just petrol and the expensive stuff was for Bentleys and Rollers & Mercs ( not me). I seem to remember reading that the availability of E5 is only a transitional thing, ie "not for ever"

I've seen an advert for a local Yamaha SRV400 (2012). The SR400 is quite common here but this is the first SRV I've seen. Priced at approximately £800 it seems keen, hopefully not too keen!

Is anyone familiar with this bike or parts it shares with other models? Any snag- list to particularly look for? I'm very tempted to go and check it out but would like to go armed with information .

TIA

That looks great, for £800 I'd buy it and I don't even have a licence!
I'm not sure that model made it to the UK as an official import. Is it a grey? If so, watch out for parts availability and insurance costs.

Edit - I've looked this up, I think it's a grey import JDM job. There's nothing on the 'net about it in English language sites. Bits about the SRV 250. It looks like a roadster version of the Virago 250/400, shaft drive as far as I can see, drum rear brake, retro styling. Rare as charity outside Conservative Central Office. If it's good, I'd have it at that price. If it is Virago based the bits will be easy enough.

It is a looker! There's precious little info on the internet about it. Apparently an Asia only release, lots of piccies but zero information.
I'm suspecting it may be a personal import from Japan or the Philippines.
If the engine was common to other models here I'd be really interested but if it's a unique/extreme rarity then better walk away...but it's so priddy!

Do you have grey dealers in your part of the world? In the UK there are people who bring in used JDM bikes in by the crateload. I think Japan has a very strict emissions rule and the older/lower value bikes that fail the emissions get traded in and exported.

good spot on the Virago guts.
Am I right with that? Is it shaft drive? It looks like it but I can't see the drive side properly. In the UK we had thuosands of the Virago 600 variant in the 90s but not the smaller ones. They are fairly scarce bikes these days, most 30 years old by now I suppose.

We did. No car or motorcycle personal imports are allowed now. Many years ago there were specialist importers if the type you mention but they were taxed out of business.
I've managed to confirm that the SRV400 and 250 were indeed Japanese imports.
All a bit moot now as the advert has been taken down.

That tank may well have been stolen from the Yamaha SRX6, which was an 80s offering.
