I have heard of a wood yard and a coal yard but not a book yard.

There are places you can by books by the yard, or possibly metres these days.

There's a market barely 2km from me where on a good day you can buy almost by the km!

Perhaps slight exaggeration - but they can be piled high.
 
But metres are to do with length, like yards only longer.
Maybe it's to do with the length of the poem? And maybe it's just that we don't properly understand these archaic systems of measurement. I have no idea, for example, which is longer: an Iambic Pentameter, or a Modern Pentathlon.
