The next 007

Haha! Tell your wife then she's officially a Bond girl. Or Bond babe, that should wind her up. And she should count herself lucky too- that'll defo do the trick.

The Wife is a politically active feminist, so referring to a woman as a ‘girl,’ is offensive enough. I agree with her, natch.

Excellent- even better then. You being offended by 'bond girl', & refusing to wind her up about her Bond botty incident, & going all 'gooey PC manbag' in her defence instead.. I find rather amusing :)

The death of James Bond in the last outing has cleared the way for a total reboot.
I hope they don't go down the "inclusive" route as that would not represent 007 at all. Leave that to Disney and their many box office flops of late.
Tom Hiddleton has been long tipped for the role and would be at least the equal of Pierce Brosnan in that particular role.
What about a new name if they choose continuance over reboot? "The name's Oath, Charles Oath"?...

But if, as mooted upthread, films were remade 'in period' they could retain the correct title.
Yes, but whilst the technology and scenery have moved with the times the notion of the UK as a diminished but still mighty global player had remained rooted in the 60s.

A constant monarch in whose name this was illusion was sustained just about kept the show on the road. Whatever else changed, even Bond, her demand for service endured.

Is being equal to Pierce Brosnan a good thing?

The one you refer to was indeed unwatchable. Couple of decent ones since but you’ve not missed much.
It was the least of the bunch but it was Craig’s performance that made people watch it. I have a lot of admiration for an actor who can push through the internet loonies and show them what a good actor can do. Though there are some issues, the stylish direction and added depth to the characters took the films out of their ‘Carry On Bond’ look and feel. The Craig era may have had its detractors but it has rescued the franchise and taken it out of its non-PC routes exemplified by Connery’s bottom touching incident. I thought they’d been getting it wrong for years. Who knows what comes next. I suspect a Kingsman/ Bourne/Monkey Man influenced franchise. As long as they don’t go for a Lazy Lazeby or Woody Moore I don’t really mind.

A sincere thanks to everyone agreeing on OHMSS being the best movie. I just like to add the perfect helicopter scenes.

BTW I have 25 Bond novels, including 'Colonel Sun' by Kingsley Amis (really good) and 'James Bond The Authorised Biography' by John Pearson, that, at least, is interesting. And a few of the ones by John Carpenter, trust me, you don't need to read those...

Recently re-read most of Flemings books. 'Casino Royale' is a bit uneven, but with a fantastic card game. 'Live and Let Die' is high suspense all the way through, much more of a modern thriller. OHMSS is, btw, also the best book, just enjoy the first chapter set on a beach closing down after the day. TMWTGG isn't good, clearly the worst of Flemings books.

They got more and more incoherent and ridiculous as they went on. Almost as if every series runs it’s course and one should know when to stop.

Bit like the films (circa 1983).

Reading the plot synopsis on Wikipedia, I think it might have been 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' that sticks out for me in my memory. It's not the details of the plot as such, but IIRC, when Tracy is killed by Blofeld at the end, Bond is absolutely devastated, which seem to be very different to his usual 'love 'em and leave 'em' MO. It showed a very human and vulnerable side to him, which makes it one of the best Bond films IMHO.

Am I remembering this correctly? It was a long time ago.

I grew up with Roger Moore (not literally), so he's my favourite. For me, I always enjoyed the comedy aspect.

As for the next bond, If nothing else, I thought the guy with the eye-patch out of Game of Thrones had an amazing voice, so I'd be interested if he auditioned for the part. He may well be a crap bond (I'm far from an expert on actors) but we recently finished GOT and I'd really like to see if he could perform in a good, leading movie role.

Mahogany in looks as well as acting ability.

My daughter is very friendly with a girl of similar persuasion, and who also works for a woman's rights organisation. I keep threatening to ring her office and in proper Bond style ask to be put through to the main man there please .. :)
