The most perfect song

The most perfect song is a difficult one. The most perfect pop song though is probably "Yellow River" by Christie.

Obviously, an acquired taste but it's the most perfect song.

Waterloo Sunset goes pretty close, but yes, God Only Knows is the one.

"God Only Knows" isn't even the best song on Pet Sounds - "Caroline No" surely?

Is the test of a great song that it has been performed by lots of different people and has been great pretty much every time, otherwise it a great performance or recording. The idea of a perfect song, for me, transcends any specific version. Very few of the songs mentioned so far have survived the cover test, although Paul Young did cover Love Will Tear Us Apart : /

Best song if a single version/ recording- Move on Up - Curtis Mayfield

Best Song - covered and survived - My Funny Valentine

Two more (both Glen Campbell, both Jim Webb)

'By The Time I Get To Phoenix'
'Wichita Lineman'

...plus two from Gilbert O'Sullivan;-

'Alone Again (Naturally)'
'Nothing Rhymed'

I was about to post "This far in, and no mention of Wichita Lineman?"

I'll add Walk On By, preferably Dionne Warwick's version (though Isaac Hayes' one is incredible).

Perfect, as in more often than not evoking an emotional hit that feels just peachy & has the power to make one forget the daily grind, if only for a few minutes, then I would choose “I loves you Porgy” by Gershwin.
