"The Ghost in the MP3" - What MP3 Compression Removes from Music

From teh wiki on teh internetz --

Klingon has seven conjunctions, and they are different for nouns and for sentences.

The noun conjunctions are je for a logical conjunction, joq for a logical disjunction and ghap for an exclusive disjunction. Noun conjunctions go after the nouns they connect. Sentence conjunctions are ’ej for a logical conjunction, qoj for a logical disjunction and pagh for an exclusive disjunction. ’ach (or ’a) but is used to contrast sentences.

J'oh

Conjunctions of all sorts can start sentences, but for best effect the conjunction and what follows should be logically connected to the preceding sentence or paragraph.

And that's the shit, man.

Digital with 100% lost is easy to spot

at what percentage removed are you saying it becomes inaudiible?

Care is needed when expressing a percentage. You need to define of what you require a percentage assessment.

Do you mean data (digits), or musical information in the perceived final analogue domain ?

A quick guesstimate from experience suggests that no audible information is removed when the file size is reduce by 50% -ish.

Of course that does not mean half of the digital data is lost, it has merely been re-formatted in a compressed form.

File sizes below half the original size tend to be lossy formats, but dependent on the codec employed ( inc. vbr ?) probably means that no humanly audible music information is lost, even then.

Wow, How amazing that a serious post can bring out all the PFM members who try to prove how clever and well educated they are or have been locked in a cupboard for most of their developing years.

Don't think anyone's doing that, and neither are they being too serious. Nice to see for a change.

I'm neither clever nor well educated, but I'm very curious to know how you found out about the cupboard.
