The 2023 Formula One Season

I saw it as much too tight. Russell had nowhere to go.

George did move a fair bit in that opening drag prior to that..I dont blame George, they all want to win, but realistically he knew that Lewis was able to smoke both him and the leader on those tyres from the off, could have just supported his team mate...and he may have overtook him later on anyway when the Softs started to go off as they did quite quickly yesterday..

Lewis has just taken responsibility for the collision so George’s boots are fitting again

He's a humble guy, he would in the interest of his team imo, he knows he wasnt entirely void of blame, but George could have clearly done better for reasons above

“I’ve watched the replay and it was 100% my fault and I take full responsibility. Apologies to my team and to George.”

And I'll bet he wins most, if not all, of the remaining six. It seems there that we have a rerun of the season whern Sebastien Vettel won every single race from the mid-season break to the end. Newey had delivered a car that played perfectly to Vettel's driving style, and the combination was unbeatable. Yes, drivers need to step up, but if the designers can't step up and deliver the goods the drivers need, they can't. There were times in the past when brilliant drivers in inferior machinery have triumphed - Nuvolari's "impossible victory" at the Nürburgring in 1935 (no, I'm actually not that old, I only feel it sometimes!) and Moss at Monaco and the Nürburgring in 1961 - but those days are past.
McLaren are getting pretty close so it will not be as easy as it has been for VER.

When VET won the 2013 championship with his unstoppable run in the second half of the season it was enabled by an upgrade from Renault who gave RBR a big step up in their performance (at the same time as Lotus)) in the second half of the season.

In the first half at Merc F1 we had developed our car with new tools and processes to get from a distant 5th in 2012 to be competing for first in the first half of 2013 and then ended up second as Merc were focused on 201 and beyond and did not deliver any upgrades. The Renault upgrade was to deliver new engine modes that allowed the diffuser to be energised in the braking zone, to make it easy to transition into the corner. Lotus and RBR made very effective use of it.

And then had a massive go at Renault in 2014 and 2015 for delivering a weak hybrid powerplant....

Just seen the start on highlights. Hamilton was quick to blame Russell, but much later when everyone could see who was really at fault, he held his hands up. Perhaps he should have shown more humility and respect to his team mate before taking him out. He has nothing to prove historically and can prove nothing more this season.

Having watched the incident from several angles I do wonder if Hamilton sort of deliberately put Russell in a position where he had 3 options:

1) Bail out of the situation leaving Hamilton in second or possibly even first (as Hamilton was outpacing Verstappen at that point).
2) Move to the right and tag Max possibly taking them both out and Hamilton able to sail away into the distance.
3) Hold his line and get clipped by Hamilton.

I'll bet Hamilton never expected option 3 :D

I am not sure what the etiquette for this is, but I did my first webinar for an Indian company that is organizing a training and development eco system for Asian students. The company is called the United Motorsports Academy and I was asked to be a volunteer on their advisory committee to try and make sure that their masters level students were taught what they needed to know. I volunteered as I like the people running it, a good friend of mine, Willem Toet is an aero specialist and is helping them, and I want to help students learn, without being a lecturer!

So as part of promoting the growing eco system in India I was asked to present some analysis based on public domain data that showed what McLaren had done to make their massive turn around in performance this year. It is this kind of analysis that I set up in F1 around 25 years to follow what competitors were doing and so I am very familiar with the process. It turns out that there is a data feed that some kind people have given access to and the basic data that you need to do help you understand vehicle performance changes is there (car speed, time, distance, throttle, DRS). So all it needed was my expertise to develop and deliver some coherent analysis.

I presented what I have done in a hosted webinar. Apart from my not sharing my screen to start with I am told that people are really happy with what I did, but I am open to feedback as I only 20 mins for the presentation and then 30 mins for answering questions.

UMA IanW Webinar on vehicle performance

I hope that some on here find it interesting.

Thanks for posting that Ian, watched it last night and found it very interesting. The dt overlays are a real storyteller as to the differences in cars' capabilities and drivers' performances.

I am a bit of a scuker for the overlays anyway... I remember seeing some of Schumacher's throttle/braking overlays against Barrichello and the different ways they drive through corners was quite astonishing... and went a long way to explaining Schumacher's dominance.

It seems that there are stories around that Formula1 has been talking to other broadcasters to replace Sky.

Sadly Apple seem to be mentioned.

As long as the highlights are still on Channel 4 ....

And they get Brundle on a free transfer. Apple can have Alex Jacques and his over-stressed prepositions.

Sounds good to me, Apple will do a better job than Sky.

At least 4K coverage will probably be standard with Apple, none of this drip feeding of 00's 1080p with NOWTv or having to have Sky directly and paying a premium for 4K.

Hopefully Apple will get this on that basis alone...I imagine the subscription costs will also be fairer.

I’m out of Sky F1 and any real interest in F1 from next month anyway. I’ll probably keep the Sky Q thing going for a while, depending on how much they want to rook me off for.

I avoided watching the Qatar race intentionally, and I really didn’t miss it at all. It’s just too artificial for me.

Note the absence of a safety car:

Nobody died. They were grown ups who knew how to avoid driving into a stationary object.
