Soncoz SGD1 User experience

A question for SGD1 users - has anyone tested whether it works best using its own volume control or as a pure DAC with a separate preamp?

That'll depend on your pre amp quality and power amp gain. I couldn't hear a difference between them when I had a loaner from Keith. The volume control is very good, couldn't hear any effect from it at any reasonable attenuation.

Using mine with an old Naim CB preamp, same as above, and I now have remote volume and switching on all of my digital sources, with a neolithic amp.

Thanks guys. I only have one source so it would be nice to do without a pre if possible but wouldn't want to do it if sound was compromised as a result.
