i watched the first episode of elementary the other day and it is just as bad as sherlock. everything done too quickly, forcing complexity into 40 minutes. absolutely no subtlety in portraying sherlock's skills, to the point that he becomes an annoying (and impossible) know it all. a comic strip character, at best.

i will say, however, that lucy liu was worth watching. too bad she didn't go over to denmark and star in one of their mystery dramas.

vuk.

It's very much a network, police procedural. Just a better than normal one as not as annoying as Twitter Generation/Children's Programme Sherlock.

PS I think you would make an excellent Sherlock adversary Vuk. Perhaps some errant, radical academic who reluctantly turns to bringing the government down in reponse to morally bankrupt administration.

Sherlock for me every time. I think people are just not 'getting' the character development and interplay(s). Personally I prefer character driven drama rather than the 'oh look this has happened, wham bam, case closed' nature of single episodes that most detractors seem to want.

Elementary, on the other hand, is typical spam two dimensional drivel.

Sadly, Sherlock is a gadget/technotwaddle driven drama (with a few 'boys-own' emotional scenes thrown in.) It really is just like Doctor Who - not surprising really, considering who it's written by.

Check list

Fast talking 'superman' who feels the need to spout hundreds of lines of exposition every minute. Check.

Slightly dim companion to receive superman's wisdom. Check.

Overly complex plotting. Check.

Overdone special effects to hide plot holes. Check.

Elementary is just a procedural, granted. But as the two leads make Sherlock's pair look like first year RADA students, I still prefer it. :D

Sherlock works for me, even though I can see the sleight-of-hand tricks they do to make silly things seem clever.

I didn't get in on Elementary from the beginning, but have recently been trying to give it a chance. I don't see anything yet that lifts it above the usual pack of slightly humorous police procedurals, I think it's just Monk with a Brit accent. And I don't think any of the secondary characters are memorable. It joins the list of "watchable" procedurals such as Bones or The Closer, a pleasant diversion if there's nothing better to do. Sherlock is more of an "event" to me.

Well said Sir!

The Closer is orders of magnitude better than Bones! It's got a fine ensemble cast and was well produced and written. Bones is unwatchable unless you are my mum.

But surely Sherlock is the very definition of non-character driven "wham bam" drama? It's kind of what Gattis and Moffat do.

Point well taken, but Bones is good for one thing - really good gross dead body porn.

To be fair, the original Sherlock Holmes stories are fairly one-dimensional too. Still, at least they avoid the 'in touch with his feminine side' aspect of the current TV series.

The thing is - Castle was back yesterday (i don;t get to see it until tonight though) which is far more fun that either elementary or this seasons Sherlock (so far).

I assumed people only watched Castle as they have a massive crush on either Beckett or him out of Firefly.

Castle is very hit/miss but beckett does make up for any crap stories.

The mentalist can be the same although I am glad red john is dead as that was dragged out far too long. The latest episode in Corpus Christi was quite crap and very weak storywise.

These are all generic procedurals. Elementary is a bit of that and is in no danger for being mistaken for great art but it's a cut above the ordinary I think.

Sherlock is a very different thing altogether. Some love it others not so much.

Following disappointment of the latest Sherlock episodes have started watching elementary and am now hooked, currently watching series 2.

So Sherlock or Elementary, what's your preference?

Never seen Elementary, at least there won't be a 4th series of Sherlock as it's now disappeared so far up itself in series 3 that it's ceased to exist :)

I thought the Season 3 finale got off to a good start, right up to the point where Sherlock was shot, when it immediately went right off the deep end of Moffat-Gatiss' self-indulgence.

Looks to me like they filmed a decent enough episode, then went nuts in the editing suite. The villain was delightfully sinister and au courant, but the final reveal of his method was unsatisfying. And the "surprise" at the end was poorly executed.

Who would have thought Dr. Watson would drive a Quattro S-Line A3?

I hope Season 4 can be "a delightful return to form".

Right up to the point we saw who the shooter was:rolleyes:..then the guffaw's could be heard echoing around the country.

Having just watched 'House of Fools' I recommend replacing Cumberbatch and Freeman with Vic and Bob, with MATT BERRY as Lestrade.

Now that'd be worth watching.:D
