Scotland has always been more sympathetic to Europe than England, so the SNP is favoured by EU fans now as well as nationalists.

Flying Rodent comments on the latest polling from Scotland:

I’ve said repeatedly that I think Scottish independence is less national liberation and more a very cruel hoax on the populace, much like Brexit was - if less of an actual heist - but you can only ask people to put up with being handcuffed to a masturbating gorilla for so long.
Masturbating gorilla!

I can’t help thinking that the current UK government is doing everything it can to overcome the many rational and pragmatic objections that the Scottish electorate might have to idea of Scottish independence.

Plus, as was the case with Brexit, Labour appear to be supporting the Tories with that.

The Conservative Party leader-elect in Scotland, Douglas Ross failed to turn up for the Scottish VJ Day commemoration and bunked off to the football to make some extra cash as a linesman. It resulted in widespread condemnation. He also failed to show up for a key vote in the Commons previously in order to trouser £1,500 from another fixture. People see this.

So no comment from the nationalists on the fact 56 of those 59 seats put forward as a sign of great support for nationalism was from 50% of the electorate in Scotland.

Why am I not surprised...

Not always.

In the 1975 EEC referendum, the SNP campaigned on leaving the EEC.

The SNP and its supporters aligned themselves with other notable groups such as the National Front, The Communist Party of Great Britain, Ulster Unionist Party, DUP, Official Sinn Féin, Provisional Sin Féin and Plaid. Some of the older members here quite possibly will have voted.

Nearly 15m (68%) in England voted ‘yes’ to remain in the EEC versus 1.3m (58%) in Scotland.

Point is, things have changed and can change again.

Worth remembering that in the 1997, 2001 and 2005 General Elections, Labour would still have won without Scotland.
The Tony Blackburn of British politics hadn't been rumbled then. He was the best political con-artist in my lifetime. So far, anyway.

Here’s the latest polling of voting intentions for the next Scottish Parliament elections in May,

you don’t need to be Sir John Curtis to work out where this is heading.

Sturgeon has a lot of trust from the Scottish electorate, Labour has next to none. While Leonard is in charge that won't change. The only question is when Scotland will become independent from the rest of the UK. I'm resigned to this way of thinking.

"RICHARD Leonard has pledged to stay on as leader of Scottish Labour – insisting his party will oppose a second independence referendum at next year’s Holyrood election. Mr Leonard has come under internal pressure – with polls indicating Labour are set to stay in third place at May’s election, still behind both the SNP and the Scottish Conservatives. Today's Herald"

Labour is the dead parrot of Scottish politics.

So what? We all know the SNP is popular at the moment. It is heading nowhere unless the tories agree to a referendum.

Let’s deal with facts instead. That 56 seats from 59 you brought to the thread earlier as a great indicator of nationalism rife in Scotland was achieved from 50% of the vote. What are your thoughts on that please?

Oh, and a reminder that an election and a referendum are not equivalent, let alone an opinion poll.

You can only play the game that's put in front of you, and that voting structure was a Westminster decision not an SNP one.

It's also worth noting that the Scottish Parliament does have PR (although with a system that was designed by Labour with the intention ensure the SNP could never obtain an outright majority).

I was just talking to my dad about this thread. He was a maths teacher in the army in the 60s. He said the Scottish recruits were significantly more literate and numerate than the English back then.

Is it still the case now? If not, what happened?

I know that, Steve, but a referendum on independence is not FPTP. Every vote counts, the focus will not be the same.

I’m not blind to the popularity of the SNP and I see why that is so given the Westminster govt, but the first obstacle is getting a referendum at all. Nobody has yet come up with anything that makes me think the tories will agree to another referendum. The chances of Sturgeon going for one without agreement is very small, imo.

The best way forward is to unite against the tories.

Love the socialist SNP and think Nicola is a superb leader. Pity she's not running the whole UK!
Hope Scotland gets independence ASAP with full EU membership. Then just need to round up the likes of Rupert Murdoch, Evgeny Lebedev, Dorris, Grease Smug, Farage etc and make sure they end up propping up a flyover somewhere and England can start to make progress in the same direction.

I have just donned my blue (strangely stripey) face paint and one of my my better half's pleated skirts - FREEDOM.

Scotland has itself a long and distinguished history. It has often defined itself in relation to and in opposition to England....time for it to stand on its own two feet and be independent from the rest of the UK.

And the world turns....Elvis sang that (Ballboy 2001)

Haha, don't believe everything you read in the Sunday Post!
