It's all the same metal. Octal valves have different metal used in their construction as the pins don't need to go through the glass.
Kovar is a special alloy which has the same coefficient of expansion as glass....

Generally a fibreglass pencil does the trick.
A bit abrasive though and probably only a last resort if really bad.

Not sure what chemicals are on the wadding but it does the trick on all kinds of electrical contacts. follow up with IPA as a final clean.
