Recommended movies etc on Netflix/Amazon Prime III

I watched Jaws 1975 the other night! It was with my brother and I was a bit cut to be fair, but christ alive what a boring film! There is like 4 minutes of action over 2 hours. I totally got the special effects being amazing for the time and indeed how difficult it must have been to film, jesus though, boring af.

Also started watching Shogun, 2 in and really very good so far.

The special effects were not very good which is why relatively little of the shark was shown ( except towards the end when we see rather too much of it, drawing attention to it's rubberyness).

I think it's strength lies in the editing which makes a virtue out of this weakness as well as of course the direction, on top of which are brilliant performances from a well picked cast. Add some excellent dialogue and I think it makes for a great film.

I can see it's become something of a period piece and newer films with their superior effects and quick editing catch the eye but often lack feel and chemistry.

I think I oversold it to my children who seemed rather underwhelmed and would probably support your view.

The more chillingly effective parts in Jaws contained no special effects at all, shame they didn’t play more to that, it got more comical as use of effects increased. If I were to watch it again it would be for Robert Shaw’s hammy Quint.

Netflix, 3 Body Problem. I enjoyed the first 3 episodes, but found it quite uninteresting thereafter. Some good performances, some hardly cutting the mustard.

For Jaws fans, it's well worth looking up the deleted scenes on YouTube... I'm surprised one was left out, because it's pretty horrific (maybe that's why it was left out?)

Don't know if it's been said already, but 3 Body Problem on Netflix is worth a watch (so far anyway, on Ep 4).

Edited: and of course I fail to see the post above

Enjoyed 3 Body Problem. Benedict Wong and Liam Cunningham give standout performances.

Quite funny to see Brit comedians in various roles…

Surprised to see Eiza Gonzales (3 Body Problem nano-scientist actor) at the same pub as us last night!

Bruce (the shark) apparently caused endless trouble. We can be grateful that Spielberg chose to leave out the more rubbishy bits of Benchley's original novel (the oceanographer's fling with the policeman's wife, the mayor's financial shenanigans) and concentrated on the basic story.

The tale of how Quint earned his hatred of sharks is told in another film:

It has been criticised by the survivors for its portrayal of the crew members, and the sharks are even more unrealistic, but it gets the basics of a sad story right. Having delivered the atomic bomb, the captain asks for his escort. "No escort, you were never here," was the reply. As a result, it was only an accidental spotting by a long-range maritime reconaissance aircraft and a Catalina captain who defied his orders and landed his plane on the open ocean that saved them. Needing a scapegoat, the Navy court martials the captain for hazarding his ship by not zig-zagging - and a surprise witness is the Japanese submarine captain who did the sinking.

My favourite podcast on the subject of Netflix itself and how it's sort of in the process of re-inventing itself to be like BBC and ITV were before Netflix came along.
