Previously happy LP12 owners who moved on.....

I like the notes they play, I’m still trying to like the order they play them in :)
lol, that’s about how I feel.
Some decent lyrics and very good musicians but they just dont gel for me.
We have three albums of theirs and I still don’t get it.
One track I dont mind is reeling in the years but only for the guitar parts. lol

Regardless of what you think of their music, the musicians are quite a bit above ‘very good’. It’s pretty much a badge of honour to make an appearance on a Dan record.
I think you have put your finger on the problem.

I once tried owned a THORENS suspended turntable
That's very unspecific considering how many suspended turntable models Thorens made (and many tonearm models too). :)

Julian Vereker of Naim used the Phonosophie No.3 TT which was based around the TD3001.

The last model based on this concept was the TD-350 I think though Thorens still make suspended turntables.

FWIW, the core parts of a late 1980s LP12 have longevity. I bought mine in 1988 or so, Valhalla PSU, I think, with Basik Plus arm. All that's been done over the years is change the belt, add a few drops of oil to the bearing, and change the cartridge (K18 to Audio-Technica AT-OC5, to Ortofon Quintet Red).

Never been "tuned up", never seen the inside of a dealer's workshop at any point, and although the motor is making a strange buzzing noise, it still works fine.

A friend who bought his in the 1990s, and who has upgraded regularly over the years, visited me last year and remarked on how good it sounded ....

I like Steely Dan, there I’ve said it 😀👍.

Me too, but one does need a hi-fi that can do pitch, rhythm and timing to get them. <ducks, covers>

PS Not entirely joking. I have over the years rejected some hi-fi and tweaks that killed the inherent groove/swing of certain Steely Dan tracks. I’d never settle on a new component without spinning something from them (or Fagen’s Nightfly).

Initially listening online they remind me of The Eagles and Doobie Bros, not really my bag at all, great harmonies and playing with some interesting lyrics, in general I don't really like 70's MOR/AOR rock or any jazz, there's really only a handful of artists/ titles from the late 60's and 70's that I like, mainly Bowie, Velvets, Doors, Floyd, Joy Division and a bit of Blondie, most of the music I like and own comes from my own era , but I'll perhaps purchase a few 2nd hand CDs and take a listen, I always try to keep an open mind and give something a chance.

My route in was Donald Fagen’s Nightfly back in the early ‘80s when it came out. Largely due to the bass playing/rhythm section, groove etc. It just swings like hell and has such an amazing bass sound. From there I worked backwards through the Steely Dan catalogue. They are an outlier in my collection, I’ve no time for Eagles, Doobie Brothers etc, and I detested ‘80s AOR (I was into new-wave, synth-pop, industrial, indie, hardcore etc). I just loved the groove of Nightfly, and Gaucho, Aja and earlier bring more of the same. Now I’m older and have much wider taste I get the jazz references etc too, but initially it was that bass on Nightfly. In its own way that was as influential to me as Joy Division, PIL etc.

Could someone start a (what are they called?) Steely-something thread over in the Music room? I literally have no idea what you're all talking about!

Sort of cool fusion Nic until some Lullaby specialist joins in. If I have grandchildren I’m going to get them to sleep with him, erm, singing, won’t take long.

Obviously off-topic, but I’m quite surprised that there is so much criticism of Steely Dan music on this thread.

I genuinely believed that Steely Dan was one of the few bands that most audio buffs could agree are at least pretty good.

I don’t adore all of their output, but feel that when they are good, they are very good indeed.

“FM” Is one of my favourite songs, period. YMMV.

30 seconds of it is 29 too many for me.

"That's very unspecific considering how many suspended turntable models Thorens made (and many tonearm models too)..."

I totally agree.

Sorry about that, guys.

I just can't for the life of me be sure of the model of the THORENS suspended deck that I briefly owned.

We are going back a long way, but a quick search of the THORENS models strongly suggests that it was a THORENS TD150, with its quite narrow timber surround to the top-plate.

Feel free to take my comparative comment with a grain of sodium chloride. 😂

I don’t think they have much in common with The Eagles or Doobies apart from the obvious. I’m not an Eagles fan as such but they could sing & harmonise really well, quite often elevated other people’s records by being on them. Thinking Jackson Browne & Joni Mitchell.

Let’s be honest, ‘Take it to the limit’ is a great song, especially if you’re a bit tipsy.

I’m very wide open in terms of music, find stuff I like across eras & genres.
