My guess is the OP has traded in the recalcitrant LP12 for a Rega P10!

Joking aside, I do hope the OP’s LP12 issues have been resolved.

Like others on here, I’m also curious to hear from the OP. It’s good to get updates and info.

This thread reminds me of a sale I did on here a while back - the ‘buyer’ didn’t reply to a PM for what seemed to me like weeks and I was getting a bit fed up. Turned out he didn’t live on pfm like me, he had a life and only checked in once or twice a month :):D

Same here. Was offered a pair of headphones via PM. Expressed interest in them and replied. Never heard nothing for many a day. Thought they'd been sold. Appeared doesn't visit forum much any more.

Well either that or he was assassinated to keep him quiet?

Haha oops! The OP is back, thankfully not assasinated... most certainly not ungrateful for the advice received... and happy to report that I have not been tied up with blue belts, kidnapped by Linn, or admonished into submission by the dealer! (Oranges & Lemons are very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful and not at all frightening I am pleased to report!) I must apologise for the delay in coming back with an update though... it has been a very, very long time and there are many reasons. I didn't plan for it to be this long, particularly as so many people have been so helpful... the very least I can do is update you on this mini saga!

First of all life happened - I run two little businesses, and people in my life like me to help them with lots of things. And I've been ill unfortunately (perhaps problems with the LP12 will send me to an early grave?), so time has been very scarce sadly, and even listening to records has had to take a bit of a back seat.

Secondly, I got pretty overwhelmed with the potential routes to fix the issue but elected in the first instance to switch back to the original bearing and subchassis to see what that did. It didn't fix the problem but I did notice a difference - I would say that it warmed up / softened the definition and clarity of the lower end... perhaps this is the 'bloom' that was mentioned by some.

Thirdly, and this is where it might get a bit embarrassing... it became clear there is something wrong with my hearing. Typically my hearing has been above average - yet suddenly there is a bit of tinnitus, a feeling of fullness and some things are more muffled than before. I became convinced my ears were full of wax (as this has happened before) so dutifully followed instructions to use Earol (measured doses of olive oil) before attending to have it sucked out with a little machine. I was alarmed when they only found a little bit in one ear... and even more alarmed to discover that I was now occasionally getting distortion in my left ear, particularly in restaurants / pubs and sometimes just from speech. After lots of research and discussion with doctors, its possible there's something up with my Eustachian tubes. Either a partial blockage, inflammation, or I wonder if some of the olive oil has got in there. SUCH a nuisance and so ridiculous if there was nothing wrong with the setup of the LP12 at all, but that it just coincided with my hearing going a bit funny. I expect to be laughed out of the forum if so!

Anyway, currently I am in no position to properly evaluate the sound. Although I can still tell when there are differences, I can't properly analyse anything. It's deeply concerning, not only because I love listening to music so much but also because I work with audio a lot in my film work... and I'm a musician. So I have an appointment with the audiologist, steroids for my Eustachian tubes and I've put my car under close scrutiny... it may be up for sale soon, as its a bit racy and has a rather throaty exhaust. I want to preserve my hearing over everything else, so perhaps its time to go electric.

Thanks as ever for everyones advice... I'm sure I'll be back with further updates on this thread, because it's far from over. It's just taken a very odd and unexpected turn! I am looking forward to your recommendations for upgrades to my Eustachian tubes, and observing heated debate as to whether I have used the right oil in my ears etc ;)Perhaps some of you are doctors, audiologists, ENT specialists... I hope so!

You have my sympathy, back in 2020 Covid played merry hell with my hearing. Took a full 9 months to fully return to normal.

Appreciate it and sorry to hear what you went through. It's interesting as I had some long Covid stuff to deal with that messed up my lungs. I hadn't considered whether it would affect my hearing - what happened for you if you dont mind me asking? I mean I dont even know if I've had Covid again since... isn't life a minefield at times!

Hi, had a bad cold/flu, obviously tested for C19 and it came back positive (this was in the days of drive through testing - doesn't time fly?). Did the normal thing of blocking everything up/full of green slime for a while. Normally, once that stage is over, everything returns to normal, but I had problems with hearing and balance for some months afterwards. Loads of tests, including CAT and MRI, nothing conclusive, it just 'went away'. I became very sensitive to high frequency's; cymbals, female vocals became unbearable. a real problem for a Sandy Denny devotee! Then just went. Bloody virus's!

Yes, this is probably the right course, and I'm sorry to hear of your ear problems! I had a very mild viral infection about 10 years ago that caused tinnitus in my right ear. IIRC steroids are the right treatment and can restore lost hearing if started soon enough after the onset of symptoms.

Perhaps this has been covered by your docs, but I also find that pseudoephedrine (e.g. Sudafed, but only the "real stuff" from which meth can be made) helps reduce ear pain/fullness when it arises.

Good luck!
Joe

As a fellow Sandy devotee she was absolutely full of cold when she recorded Battle of Evermore. Robert Plant was really impressed and described her as “the best of the British girls” That’s the problem with stairs when you are pissed; it’s a bit of a lottery.

Very sorry to hear your story. Much more minor event, but last Friday I was working in my studio as normal and noticed the sound from my system sounded terrible. No bass and very tinny no image depth etc etc. I thought maybe the mains quality had suddenly gone bad. Didn't improve all day. Tried the main system in the house in the evening, also sounding terrible with exactly the same symptoms. Thinking that was a bit weird and the mains must really have taken a dive I didn't listen to anything else over the weekend. Back in the studio Monday morning sound system sounds fantastic again, as does the system in the house in the evening. Scratch head, then put two and two together. On Thursday evening I had a flu vaccination and felt very fluy over the weekend. By Monday this had gone. Clearly the vaccination had affected my hearing... One wonders how many people system problems might be temporary or longer hearing issues

How interesting that a thread that started as a seemingly technical problem turns out now to be all about the shit that life throws at you! Here's hoping that the OP makes a speedy recovery to good hearing.
