Picking up my new car today

Are we talking mainstream insurers here or specialised ones for such small premium increases for re-mapped cars ?

In my case it's mainstream.

After being with specialists for many many years I now find that large mainstream companies give more favourable rates than them, and to be frank I'd rather go with a big name than some of the back street specialist brokers I've used in the past. They have become far too expensive, especially if you are after just a standard fully comp. limited miles policy without track day use.

I was taken for spin in a remapped 535D too. Made you wonder if you need an M5! It also shredded a rear tyre on an acceleration run down the slip road...

Believe me, a bog standard M5 with 550 BHP and min. 680 nm will eat a tweaked 535. I had one and that V8 engine is truly mental. Forget 0-60 times, 50-100+ acceleration is more relevant for road driving and the M5 is mind boggling.

Whether you need one is a different question of course:)

This was before I had a passenger ride in a 991 Turbo with 560 bhp that bent my brain with it's acceleration so maybe that 535D might seem a bit 'tame' now. ;)

I remember reading about our car last year, VW DSG 1.8 TSi, that when remapped it went from 160BHP to 210 BHP, I'm sure the cost was £180, it tempted me at the time but was wary over insurance hikes. I might look into it again as the driveability was supposedly greatly enhanced.

Just beware that is probably a generic one map/chip suits all solution. Car will be quicker I've no doubt but without knowing what's going on in your engine via real time bespoke mapping and rolling road time it is not the best solution.

I seem to recall it was through a company that done upgrades to any VAG cars, things like sat nav, steering wheels, bluetooth, etc.

I’ve had various cars remapped, always with great results. Yep, this one will remap (with no other alterations i.e. DPF stays in place) to 345bhp and 515ft lb of torque. But standard is 0-62 in 6.4s so still amazing for a diesel.

I won’t mess with it too much as I don’t think it will need it. But I will remove the swirl flaps and plan to drop in some MB Quarts (with upgraded under seat subs) with an amp as the standard stereo SQ is supposed to be poor and apparently that upgrade makes them sound amazing. May or may not replace the head unit as that is more of a faff.

My wife always titters when my brother-in-law mentions his Volvo swirl flaps. Fortunately, my antediluvian V70 is devoid of the pesky things.

Yes - delighted it’s normal!

Car felt great on the way back, a few niggles like one speaker not working - the stereo sounds amazing though. Averaged 45mpg and discovered it has adaptive Xenons which is a bonus.

Nice one, just make sure you know were the indicator stalk is, I understand BMW hide them. :)

That is SUV and Evoque type vehicles nowadays tbh.

Continue to be v.pleased with the car, for the price they really are astonishing value. Just in a different league to my Octavia.

The Idrive is a useful bit of kit too Jez. Never bothered with it at first but it is great once you get to know all it does!

I’m gradually dissing it out Kenny! Fuel computer I need to have a look at as my Skoda one did data relating to your journey automatically and I can’t see that on the BMW.

i thought the aux-in wasn’t working, but have now found a trailing cable so that’s great news. Need to further investigate the stereo, despite the drivers door tweeter not working, it sounds amazing so is definitely not standard - apparently standard didn’t have separate tweeters.
