Picking up my new car today

Sadly my Octavia VRS died recently on the way back from holiday - hole in the cylinder head. I’ve decided not to repair it.

So, spent some time mulling over a replacement; get a new car on lease-hire, a newer car or something different.

So, hopefully I’ll be picking this up later today from Looe in Cornwall!

Ah - it’s a 535D M Sport Touring. LCI so has the Efficiency Dynamic stuff on it like regenerative braking.

I may change the M6 wheels...
Nice! I had a loan of a 07 535D M-Sport saloon last week while my car was in the garage. It was remapped to around 360bhp and over 700NM torque.

On the motorway it was like a rocket

Remapping is the way to go.....wish I'd done it when I got my Mazda 6 rather than waiting....700NM torque would be lovely.

I’ve had various cars remapped, always with great results. Yep, this one will remap (with no other alterations i.e. DPF stays in place) to 345bhp and 515ft lb of torque. But standard is 0-62 in 6.4s so still amazing for a diesel.

I won’t mess with it too much as I don’t think it will need it. But I will remove the swirl flaps and plan to drop in some MB Quarts (with upgraded under seat subs) with an amp as the standard stereo SQ is supposed to be poor and apparently that upgrade makes them sound amazing. May or may not replace the head unit as that is more of a faff.

I was taken for spin in a remapped 535D too. Made you wonder if you need an M5! It also shredded a rear tyre on an acceleration run down the slip road...

It would until it lunched your gearbox bearings after a very short time. There aren't many gearboxes outside an HGV that can stand that much torque.

From what I can gather that is utter tosh. Revised box which mine has is much stronger. It is why there was no manual option though which is a pity as that would always be my preference.

Nice one Jez, enjoy the new motor, it certainly looks nice.

As an aside if you do go the remap route at least speak to these chaps who did mine.
I can vouch for them personally after they did their stuff on my Beemer.

No silly figures thrown about, just fact.
It's a bespoke to car, ECU out, bench flashed remap too, backed up with before, after and adjustment runs on the rollers.

Mine had 3 runs before they were happy car was running safely inside parameters.............dialing it back on final run for added safety.

Maybe a few pence more than others but they do a proper job. BHP, torque and economy all improved immensely, well impressed.

Thanks Kenny - remind me what you have? I’ve been recommended to use Ecotune and they appear to have a fantastic reputation.

I’ve also been told the box they use in my car is the same as the ones used in Bentley’s at the time and therefore rated to 700nm.

Insurance implications of remapping?

Made virtually no difference on my cars, Octavia had Bilstein/Eibachs, exhaust mods and a remap - all declared.

Believe it or not, my 4.5 Cerbera had a custom remap and Nitrons and was £196 a year with commuting added!

One of the few benefits of getting old.

Absolutely not, it's a known phenomenon in all high powered cars that people start tuning. Manufacturers design a gearbox to cope with a particular power and torque, upgrade the engine too far and *bang*. It's basic engineering. Obviously some cars are affected more than others, it depends on the starting point.

Good news.

Autos are indeed part of the solution. There's also very often a clever bit of software that prevents you from unleashing maximum power and torque in the first 2 gears or so.

Are we talking mainstream insurers here or specialised ones for such small premium increases for re-mapped cars ?
