Apple phones can 'release shutter' by poking the screen. But you can also use buttons on the side too!

iPhones have had the option to press a button for many years.

My remark was based purely on observation of other folk doing the 'pokey' thing. I'm in the same camp as the OP when it comes to Apple products so have no first hand knowledge. I just tried it on my Samsung and the volume control works as a shutter release so I guess what you say may be true of other Android phones too.
