PFM's Picture a Week 2024

Two E model Apaches escorting the last two serviceable and flying D model Apaches an hour ago at Wattisham Flying Station.

A minute or so later they landed, and that’s the end of flying for the aircraft I’ve spent the last 15 years working on.
I’ve a couple of months helping to tie up loose ends etc, then I’ll hopefully be starting a new job, somewhere, doing something. Can’t quite manage retirement, frustratingly.

Ooof - that's succinct.
My very best wishes, for all that follows.
Sincerely.

Thanks Martin.

I should be ok. We’ve few outgoings now, so there’s no pressure to find a stressy job with higher pay.

I really need to sort my pensions once I’m settled into a new job so I can clearly see where I am. We’ve no aspirations to travel outside the U.K. now, and I’ve all the toys I need, at least for now.
Another new adventure is lurking!

A number of fields local to us have areas given over to these straw blocks, waiting to be used by the local straw-burning power station.

In my part of the world, stacks of these bales are associated with growing of carrots. The straw is spread over the carrots on top of a plastic sheet to keep the carrots frost free and stop them growing until they are lifted sometimes as late as June

Why aren't you staying on for the new version?
It’s a little complicated, but:

The E model contract is run by a different company. The MoD is extremely short of money. Without the cash, the MoD can’t give anything more to the new contract company, and so the new contract company can’t recruit.
Everyone involved, especially the army, wanted a smooth transition of the civilian workforce over to the new contract as the set up ‘just works’, especially as the U.K. armed forces have such well publicised challenges with recruitment and retention.
Of course, a new financial year ‘may’ see the cash being made available, but damage has been done, as we’ve been losing people in stages for about two years as the D model fleet numbers have been reduced.

As has been mentioned on pfm over the years, within a few months of being made redundant, most people are happier than they were, so probably won’t return, and that is going to cause some headaches if they try to recruit again.

Preparing prints for a customer a few weeks ago. Always makes me nervous.

Matting is always frustrating for me, unless I can use a standard pre made cut out. Despite having a matt cutter I can never seem to the the bevel cuts to match exactly at the corners.

Annoying things. Mine is very slightly out of true, which is incredibly frustrating when leaving a gap between the image and the matt, as I've done here. I should have sent it back to Logan, but I left it too long.
