New Classical purchases

I agree - everything he touches seems just right - I praised his very recent Grieg disc (Lyric Pieces) and this is just as characterful

Maria Joao Pires, John Eliot Gardiner, LSO live- the Schumann Concerto.

Heard this on Radio 3. There is true magic in this performance. The two of them surmount the limitations that venue acoustic. The older I get the more I love and respect Schumann- I found particularly his symphonic writing 'clunky' when I was young.
The coupling on the disc is with Mendelssohn- Hebrides and Symphony No.3, a good match for the Schumann. SACD and a free Blue Ray audio disc- I'll look forward to trying the latter through the hdmi input on my NAD M51 DAC with an eye to the data rate that the NAD is getting.

DG Archiv, Pinnock, English Concert- Handel Fireworks and Water Music. There is a god! Trevor Pinnock can do no wrong.

Certainly the best Water Music ever put on record. Which Fireworks? Pinnock recorded it twice, once with strings, the other with "military instruments" (the original version).

The early eighties recording of the version with the 'violeens' that the old boy on the throne at the time loathed.
I've been looking for years for a recording that sounds like this, so thank you to R3 CD Review. I have Pinnock's Brandenburgs from the same period and his version is the tabula rasa for me.

Went to Yarborough House in Bishop's Castle again this week-end, and came away with a respectable haul, including this:

I hesitated over it, but it's the jewel amongst the bunch. Exceptionally well recorded and performed. The mezzo's voice is light, bright and fresh, as is the instrumental playing. A delight; if you like that kind of thing !

CD Review on Radio 3 this morning played these two tracks, and they sound wonderful:

They're on a Channel Classics CD (CC72696) lasting just over four minutes at around £6, and the proceeds go to a charity that sends musicians into conflict areas (brave people !)

I downloaded via Presto Classics. http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/r/Challenge%2BClassics/CC72696
Be careful: if you buy the whole CD download (Flac) it looks as though it costs £9.75 but if you buy the tracks only (and there are only two tracks on the CD from what I can work out), they're £1.20 each !

Beautifully performed and sung, and a good cause. Thank you Radio 3.

That was it - I can never remember whether it was the One or Three Tuns as I used to frequent the other in Goodge Street.
I had the John Westbrook recording first but I always liked Jack May`s speaking voice. He gives a languid feel to the piece that works for me.
John Westbrook is very fine in the Bliss Morning Heroes.

I’m hearing Bliss’s Morning Heroes on Radio 3 for the first time in my life! It’s a delight.

I've heard clips from this CD and have meant to buy it for a while:

The reviews have got it right. It's like listening to the piece newly minted. If you know how the Four Seasons goes, you might not like this. At times, it almost feels as though it's being improvised. Beautifully played, beautifully recorded and ideal fodder for ESL63s!

I just ordered the Podger-Brecon Baroque Vivaldi SACD above and this LSO Live 3-SACD/1-blu ray Nielsen Symphony box-set :)
