I bought mine from Presto Classical:
http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/r/EMI/0289892

The first disc, of "light" music has many of the usual suspects (Elizabethan Serenade, "Dr. Finlay" etc) all well performed. Disc 4 (English Anthems) has a most breath-taking performance of one of my favourites, Howells' "Like as the hart desireth the waterbrooks". Beautiful. Disc 5 has a rather fine performance of the Tallis Fantasia by RVW.
All re-releases, of course, but I missed the original discs and their gathering together in this box is rather nice !

It was revealed at the enquiry the Paddlesteamer captain's blood-alcohol level was above 0.300...

Lol !

Apparently it's a Southern Railway Poster of Seaton, Devon, by Kenneth Shoesmith (1890 - 1939) Southern was obviously no more reliable then than it is now !

I have those, I have lots and lots of Sibelius...

And I think it's more accurate to say they are remarkable restorations.

This is a brilliant set:

The sacd recording is very atmospheric, the performances are good (apart from odd sounding English in the Blow), the programme is creative and well chosen and the accompanying book is delightfully produced (I haven't read it all yet, but the original conceipt is compelling). I love these Jordi Savall projects.

Once again, Amazon is not necessarily the cheapest:

I was unable to resist this :-

It should keep me going for a while, I`ve only played the 1972 Boheme so far, very good indeed though the final moments lack the magic of the 1956 Beecham / Bjoerling recording (but what doesn`t?)
Have to wait for a poor Proms evening to listen to another and it`s looking goodish this week.

I am tempted myself by this. It was featured on BBC R3's "CD Review" on Saturday.

Two more from the Bristol library sale:

Dvorak String Quartets nos 8 & 10: Prague String Quartet

Mendelssohn: The String Quartets: Melos Quartet.

£1 each.

If anyone's within reasonable travelling distance of Bristol Central Library; they're flogging off their LP stock. Plenty of 20th century classical music (e.g. Stravinsky, Boulez, Berg, Elliott Carter). The sale is on for a few more weeks, and they replenish the stock periodically. LPs are £1 each unless otherwise stickered. The ones I've bought thus far have had reasonably quiet surfaces for library stock.

Wow, that is a bargain - but it was still well worth the £130 odd that I paid - only played a quarter of them so far but no duds yet.

Its come down yet again this week by a few pounds. Not sure what's going on here, on what I thought would be a much sought after item even at the original price. Maybe Amazon over-buy, then quickly sell-off if they don't reach some internal target. Something to watch out for on future releases maybe - wait a month or so & see what happens.....

Edward Gardner seems to be doing great things in his collaborations with both the BBC Philharmonic and the BBC Symphony. I've also been enjoying his Szymanowski, Lutoslawski and Walton discs in last year or so.

This disc has a great (possibly the best I've heard) account of Britten's Violin Concerto with Tasmin Little - I don't understand why this work isn't as well known as other C.20th violin Concertos e.g. Berg, Shostakovich, both of Prokofiev's.

This is the first time I've heard the piano concerto, even though I'm a long-time Britten fan. Its less of a masterpiece IMO, Britten doesn't seem to have found his own voice (even though its roughly contemporary with the violin concerto). It could almost be a conscious attempt to copy Prokofiev, with Ravel getting quite a few mentions too.
Great recordings as usual from Chandos.

That's the trouble - the Piano Concerto is just a bit too derivative, though has some good moments, whereas the Violin Concerto is inspired
