"Moral indignation in most cases is, 2% moral, 48% indignation, and 50% envy."

Rob,

I'd prefer that the wacky fringe got a new name, then for the original name to be watered down or sullied by the wacky fringe.

I was going to suggest wackophile, but that implies something quite different.

Matt,

We need to bring back cycles per second. Hertz sounds vaguely painful, especially the mega ones.

Joe

Good one ! It's the kilohertz which are murderous, though.

Of course the suffix 'phile' means ' fondness or liking' as opposed to 'phobe' which is the opposite. Ergo, 'audiophile' means what it says, so I can't understand people considering it a derogatory term. There's nothing in it denoting 'music lover', though, except by connotation.

If you are ashamed of a word then you should reclaim it because otherwise it means someone else has the decision making power over how you define things.

And that's messed up.

fox,

Yup, and that's why I'm reclaiming it. (Lack of discretionary income and respect for the scientific method work together help keep me well away from the wacky end.)

Audiophile Joe

In the UK it may be best to move away from descriptive terms ending in "phile" as it may confuse those who may rely upon the Red Tops as a major supplier of news and comment.
