Mini-Monitor Appreciation Thread

I enjoyed some JPW black mini monitors for a couple of years they were unusual only in they were not ported. They are sealed air tight boxes. They sounded huge for their size. They bought many an audio smile very enjoyable. Richer sounds used to sell them

can i add we love the look of the Eltax i think there called studio monitors they have feet. We understand there ported like a pure radio from underneath the cabinets.

we are intrigued to know how they sounded. I understand there no longer made

our small speaker award LOL must go to the B&W DM302 91db outstanding vocal characteristics

Here they are http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Eltax-Monitor...omeAudioHiFi_HiFiSpeakers&hash=item2562d12b08

JPW's we had http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/JPW-Gold-Moni...omeAudioHiFi_HiFiSpeakers&hash=item27ba4cbc57

Oooh, a mini-monitor hall of fame :)

Wouldn't be complete without the Dynaudio Contour 1.1

At the lower end I like the JPW ML310/ML410 and also the slightly less well known but surprisingly capable Jamo Cornet 145. The i.US i700 is very good for almost pocket money too.

Does the Wilson Benesch Arc count as a mini monitor?

I must add my vote for the Leema Acoustics xero.

Ultra tiny, ultra pretty.

And fast explicit and smooth!

The very best little speaker I've ever heard. Wish I'd kept mine.

I have some Videoton Minimax 2's, not a particularly brilliant tweeter, but very good bass. Manages to sound very powerful.

I like my little Rogers db101s; case is bit plasticky, styling quirky and the spring clip connectos cheap, but they sound great on a shelf in my study...

Not really a commercial design, but the RLH Fostex FE103's were truly fabulous, even if bass was a little limited. Still to hear a better speaker on mids. The bits of ply about the place are parts of the rather larger Sachiko's that I built..

I can't believe this thread has got to 4 pages without mention of the Goodmans Maxims. Both the original 1960s versions and the later 1980/1990 Maxim/Maxim 2/Maxim 3 incarnations were all superb.

In fact, whilst my main speakers were undergoing surgery last year, for a month or so my system consisted of Naim Supernait amplifier running a pair of Maxim 2s (£5 from the car boot sale) sat on £200 worth of stands. Frankly it sounded far better than it had any right to!

I have enjoyed some conistons for many years. excellent little things. Shame the foam disintegrated. Anyone have a solution?

Re-foam them. If you fancy having a go yoruself, foams and kits can be bought from:

Recone Labs - hmm, website appears to have vanished, so not sure about them any more....

What's the name of the funny looking tiny Hungarian (or somewhere similar) speakers from years ago? I think they have a funny tweeter arrangement, they always seem to be well spoken about- bit thin on the ground though.

I loved my Neat Petite III's...swapped them with Tigerjones and he hated them...just goes to show I'spose...one man's meat etc...

I think you mean Videotone Minimax which had a cone not a dome tweeter. My wife's best friend from university got a job in Cheltenham and bought the tiniest two bedroomed terrace. She asked my advice on a hi-fi for her lounge and she loved the Minimaxs (they did indeed sound very good). The rest of her system was a budget Japanese Trio turntable and amp.

not so much a mini monitor but i love my atc scm19's which provide enough bass for my room with an accurate and articulate mid band...

That's them! I knew they were different RE tweeter arrangement.

Hi Paul, hope you're well.

You took from me the greatest speakers ever and gave me those in replacement, I've never forgiven you : >

I've had loads of pairs of mini monitors, none come close to the Harbeth P3 3SRs I'm using at the moment. In fact, in my room, they sound better than my Tannoy Chatsworths.

Fine Patrick thankyou...I know it still hurts but you must move on for the sake of your sanity...now take a deep breath...they're gone...don't look back with regret...just remember the beautiful time you had together...don't cry man...don't hold on to it ;)

Definetely will be checking out the Harbeth end of things eventually...for now the Neat Elite SE's are doing it...

Remarkable the number of cowboys on eBay flogging cheap minis and linking them to the 3/5a-the only common factor being the size.

A friend had Mordaunt Short Classic 20's in the 90's and they were better in many respects than my 11ohm Rogers 3/5 a's-better speed and dynamics but with same imaging and finess.
