I guess they’re shitting themselves that the U.K. becomes contaminated by the French method of telling our government that we are mightily pissed off.

Looks like the Met have a section going round in long leather coats now. 'Terrorism' was exactly the word (in German, of course) the Nazis used.

To misquote Elvis Costello:

"Braverman's army is here to stay
Braverman's army are on their way
And I would rather be anywhere else
But here today"

“The real driver for the Met has never really changed. It is to protect its own, and that has repercussions. When your chief operating officer gives you licence to act in a racist, misogynistic, homophobic and corrupt manner, many will do so. When they oversee a complaints system designed to protect you at all costs, what stops you from acting with complete impunity?”

The questioning is outrageous. The French had ample opportunity to make an arrest on his return but passed the buck to avoid the flack themselves. The Met were willing volunteers it seems.
So you can now be detained by the British police until they satisfy themselves you are in possession of the ‘correct’ political opinions. Fahrenheit 451 stuff.

I suspect that the French don't have such broad brush powers over fake 'terrorism' but it's unclear what crime might have been committed in the UK. The crap that they came up with won't hold water up against international scrutiny. ...put him in the van and make up the charges on the way...

looks more like schedule 7 of the terrorism act and obstructing it by failing to give passwords/pins to devices.

That was after they intercepted him at St Pancras and took him to be questioned (without access to a lawyer don't forget.) What genuine reason did they have to lift him initially, on terror related offences? That's unclear since they appear now to be on a fishing trip...

Verso books isn't in the business of selling terrorist materials at the London Book Fair.

"The police officers claimed that Ernest had participated in demonstrations in France as a justification for this act - a quite remarkably inappropriate statement for a British police officer to make and which seems to clearly indicate complicity between French and British authorities on this matter."

"The UK National Union of Journalists (NUJ) said in a statement: “The arrest of Ernest Moret is extremely concerning. It seems extraordinary that the British police have acted this way in using terrorism legislation to arrest the publisher who was on legitimate business here for the London Book Fair."

So, if participation in demonstrations is now something that the police can feel anybody's collar for, and if, having had your collar felt, you refuse to grant access to your phone or other electronic devices (which, as a citizen, you have a right to privacy on unless the police have good grounds for access), then the police will arrest you on trumped up antiterrorism legislation grounds?

Have I woken up in Russia? China?

I think the ‘interception’ would have been for the execution of a sched 7 exam. The arrest was for obstructing the exam.

you’re entitled to legal representation in sched 7.

Sched 7 of the terrorism act 2000. It isn’t a new power by any means.

It was stated that there was no lawyer present - Verso arranged a Lawyer for him later on:

"On arrival at St Pancras Station, Ernest was pulled aside by police officers acting under Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000 and detained for questioning without a lawyer present, allegedly to determine whether he was engaged in terrorist acts or in possession of material for use in terrorism."
