Laptop for £500?

Thanks very much
No "Copy disk" but I have 3 columns on MiniTool Partition Wizard
Do I want one of these ?

Left :
Data Recovery
Migrate OS
Disk Benchmark
Disk Usage Analyser

Middle :
Partition recovery
Disk Clone
Copy Partition
Disk & Partition

Right :
Launch application
Online manual
Whats new
Minitool Shadowmaker

I don't think that you have done what I asked. From that list I know what to do but I'm not telling. The whole point of downloading this was that we were both using the same application so that I could guide you.

You need to download the FREE version and not the trial. At the top of the screen it should say 'MiniTool Partition Wizard Free 11.5'

Cheers,

DV

Thanks.
Top of the screen says
MiniTool Partition Wizard Free 11.5

Double checking :
To download it again it comes up as a duplicate
pw-11 free(1)

Now that is really strange! We both have the same version but the screens are different! All I can think of is that mine was installed many years ago and has been upgraded. Still its very unusual.

You have two options a) clone which I would choose and b) migrate OS. Are your two drives the same size? I ask because cloning a smaller disk to a larger one sometimes leads to a 'loss' of disk space. For example clone a 250GB to a 500GB and afterwards the clone is only 250GB. However the missing space if this does occur can be reclaimed.

So clone your old disk to your new one. Double check everything before selecting 'Apply'.

TTFN and time for some music and plonk,

May I suggest you download windows 10 tool, create a USB stick and reinstall windows.
He will lose his MS Office suite as I doubt that he has a licence key and maybe other stuff. Also using the tool that he has downloaded he will if he so wishes be able to migrate the complete system to another computer in the future.

Cheers,

DV

I cannot help as a Mac user but I am intrigued by Darths Advice and Mikes experience.
I have downloaded from the link saying
MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition and got pw11-free.exe
also from further down the page
MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition 11 and got pw11-free.exe again.

So at the risk of being unsociable sorry Mike I think you have done or chosen something wrong

Magic jellybean - key finder will extract all the keys for windows and office etc.

Trust me. I specialise in being different !
Clone sounds best. HD is 500gb with about 60gb used, SSD is about 120mb

Lots of music always. Currently rather loud as the boss is out :)

I will lose MS Office and doubt I have the licence key so that is not a good option.
Also would rather do exactly the same thing in the future if I need to

Ah then 'clone' is unlikely to be your answer as the second disk needs to be the same or larger size.

Maybe that is why your other software failed.

There might be a way forward by shrinking the Windows partition. In Disk Management right click the Windows partition and select 'shrink'. This will analyse the disk and tell you by how much you can shrink Windows.

Didn't get this far with Acronis although that may have been the problem when it looked at the 2 disk sizes
Is shrinking likely to be easy enough for a tech breaker like me ?

If you follow my instructions above Windows will just analyse the disk and present its findings. Nothing will change until you tell Windows what to do. Personally in your position I would just buy a cheap 500GB SSD and have done with it. Your cloning software will probably spring into life.

Whilst I believe (I haven't actually done this) that Windows might be moved to the smaller SSD I wouldn't like to guarantee without actually being in front of the computer to see what was happening. Most migrations are to a same size SSD or larger HD.

If I find time I might have a play.

>>>> I have had a play and have just transferred a Windows O/S disc from a 100GB to a smaller 80GB successfully. Once we know how small your Windows can be shrunk we might be able to squeeze your 500GB onto the smaller 120GB SSD.

Can you clone a Win10 partition from an HDD to a SSD?
Well the word says 'clone' and the action does move an entire HD to an SSD that boots and runs. However what is happening deep down I haven't looked into nor care at the mo.

Here is a bit of useless info - I wrote a Disc bit copier in assembler around 40 years ago for one of our clients. Those disks were low in capacity but HUGE in size.

DV

Thanks very much
Will tread very carefully

Don't need much space so the most flexible would be another laptop with a smaller SSD, 120 or 240 ish
