Naim's New Classics

Naim have revitalised and reintroduced their core range of separate power amplifiers with Statement transistors and DR (Discrete Regulator) technology.

The new ‘DR’ versions of the NAP 200, NAP 250 and NAP 300 will be available for demonstration at Naim's retailers this June. The new NAP 500 DR will be available at the slightly later date of August 2015.

Upgrades will be available for existing owners of the NAP 250, NAP 300 and NAP 500 power amplifiers from late 2015, early 2016. Only new style product with 'tryptych' casework will be upgradeable; older 'Olive Series' style amplifiers will not be compatible. More information regarding the servicing process will be made available in due course.

Statement Technology

Last year Naim launched thier most ambitious product yet. Statement, Naim's flagship amplification system, was over ten years in the making. Designed and crafted without compromise, it offers the pinnacle of Naim musical performance.

Now Naim are able to bring two core Statementtechnologies to bear on their core range of power amplifiers, improving substantially their ability to convey the fundamental qualities of music, creating a deeper and more intense listening experience.

Naim DR (Discrete Regulator) Technology

Naim DR technology was first introduced to their separate range of power supplies in 2012. It was then applied to Naim's flagship Statementamplification system and adapted to handle the higher current demands. Now Naim have introduced the benefits of this technology to their core range of power amplifiers, providing the smooth, stable and low-noise power supply we know is vital to audio performance.

NA009 Transistors

The new Naim NA009 power transistor is the product of a year long research project in collaboration with a specialist semi-conductor manufacturer. It delivers advantages in material properties, thermal stability and die matching over the previous reference, together with being a higher power device. First introduced to naim's flagship Statement NAP S1 power amplifier, this technology will now benefit the rest of Naim's core range of Classic and 500 Series power amplifiers.

In addition to these two new technologies the circuit board designs in all of the power amplifiers have been revisited, which alongside further small improvements to transistor mounting and heat-sinking, delivers substantial gains in performance.

The NAP 200

The NAP 200 does not use the new NA009 transistors as it would not benefit from the extra current handling and other advantages they offer to higher performance power amplifiers. The NAP 200 also does not use regulated rails for the power amplifier section. It does however provide power to the attached preamplifier. This power supply is now upgraded to a DR module identical that can be found in the Hi-Cap power supply. Now the preamplifier will enjoy the low noise benefits without using an external DR power supply.

New Update Available for Naim Streaming Products

UPDATE: Bluetooth (aptX) and Firmware Version 4.3.

From 29th June 2015 ND5 XS, NDX and NAC-N 172 XS network players will be shipped with Bluetooth (aptX) compatibility. Firmware Version 4.3 for all Naim streaming products is also now available to download.

Version 4.3 will enable DSD playback for existing owners of network players equipped with the higher spec SHARC DSP hardware (ND5 XS, NDX, NDS, SuperUniti, NAC-N 272). The NDS gets multiroom capability for the first time and all players now support the higher resolution BBC Radio HLS format, can use Spotify Connect in multiroom mode and benefit from a host of minor bug fixes.

Hand-built in Salisbury England

All analogue input sockets on the NAC-N 272 are individually hand wired to the main board to enhance mechanical decoupling. The board itself is mounted on a system of shoulder bolts which releases any tension which can adversely affect sound quality. The sound critical resistors used arrive at Naim matched to within 5%. This already high tolerance is improved before assembly by hand-matching to within margin of just 1%. We then go even further by introducing a slight mechanically compliant bend in the legs of each one during assembly. We take this care and attention because we know it can help to make the difference in producing the incredible sound on which we’ve built our reputation.

Hybrid Volume Control & Class-A Headphone Amp

The NAC-N 272 volume control is derived from the design of the flagship Statement NAC S1 control. It offers smooth operation and perfect level match*ing while a Class-A single-ended headphone amplifier makes the most of high-performance headphones. As soon as headphones are plugged in, the output current drive is automatically turned up five times to give dynamic drive for all headphone impedances.

Technology & Craft

Analogue Preamplifier

The NAC-N 272 is a high-performance Naim preamplifier with quality hand-matched analogue components selected after listening tests. Great care has been taken to protect the signal path from sources of interference. The digital and analogue sections of the product communicate using optical isolation chips which minimises the impact of the noisy digital circuitry and power supply on the critical audio components.

Digital Technology

The NAC-N 272’s digital pedigree is formidable. It shares the incredibly powerful DSP (Digital Signal Processor) used by the reference NDS Network Player and features Naim’s proprietary digital audio buffering and filtering techniques. This helps to eliminate jitter and optimises the audio stream for the best musical performance from any digital source. It also means that the NAC-N 272 can play back DSD64 files.

Our flagship Statement amplification system was ten years in the making. The research and development project drew on all of our knowledge and expertise, yielding several breakthroughs in technology. Now for 2015 we’ve introduced two new technologies from the Statement project to our core range of power amplifiers.

The NAP 300 DR now features the new NA009 transistors first introduced in Statement. In development for over a year, this key component was created in partnership with a specialist semi-conductor manufacturer to achieve the best possible sound quality. The NAP 300 DR also includes the high power Naim Audio DR (Discrete Regulator) technology used in Statement to provide the smooth, stable power supply we know is critical for the audio electronics to make music come to life.

These two new technologies, combined with other small improvements to layout and componentry, mean the NAP 300 DR can produce even more of the fundamental musical pace, rhythm and timing that made the originals so popular with music lovers.

The Naim Audio NAP 300 DR delivers immense power without sacrificing any speed or agility to provide awe-inspiring levels of detail and musicality.

Like the flagship Naim Audio NAP 500 DR, the NAP 300 DR is a stereo two-chassis amplifier, one box containing the audio amplifier and the second housing the power supply. Improved earthing arrangements have resulted in an entirely new circuit topology built on a very high quality, anti-resonance main audio circuit board. The NAP 300 DR uses the same NA009 transistors that were custom-designed for the Statement NAP S1. These outstanding components each provide up to 80 Amps and 350 watts, negating the need to use parallel pairs of transistors (which always has a negative effect on sound). Additional NA009 transistors are used in the fully regulated power supply, ensuring the very best performance.

A variable speed, virtually noiseless cooling fan is mounted on a large internal heat sink providing long-term stability and the ability to swing a massive 500 VA on transients. The NAP 300 DR is stable into any load and able to drive a 2-Ohm load for long periods of time.
