I saw him live in 1979 in New Zealand. Slightly mixed; some great sections, and wonderful ensemble playing, but there were very long solos that didn't go anywhere, and a faintly disappointing end; the final section had him playing various ascending scales, blindingly fast, trying for spiritual ecstasy and getting something more like teaching exercises. But there was an acoustic section in the middle that was really good.
