Inca Tech The Claymore - is it in good condition?

Space:-quote
"Don't know why these type of amps sound that good, i suspect its the simplicity of them."

Keep It Simple Stupid K.I.S.S. has always worked for me, and it is a shame designers are never taught that now.
Magnum and Inca Tech should sound close in sound except the Magnums is a design 10yrs older than the Claymore. There was a review of a Magnum IA125 I think V a Claymore by Chris Frankland, and the Claymore came on top.
I will dig it out and check, I am off on my hols now so Merry Christmas to all.

I have owned a Claymore and a Magnum IA125 at the same time and can state that IMHO, the Claymore is a very clear winner out of the two.

Although an avid Exposure (Farlowe era) fan I would also choose the Claymore over any of Exposures integrateds. I have directly compared against all of them, even owning a X and a sXV at the same time of the Claymore so had plenty of time with them. It really is that good.

For integrateds you have to bump up the scale price wise to gain worthwhile improvements. eg MF A1000, ATC SIA150. The Restek Challenger/Fable is also a dark horse, although a different balance in sound.

Of course, all IMHO and YMMV.

I'd tend to agree - and am also a huge early-Exposure fan. Not had chance to compare with the Farlowe integrateds but I did go from a XXIRC/Super XVIII mono's rig to my Claymore and the 'reduction' in sound quality wasn't anything like I expected it to be - in fact, there are some instances where I actually prefer the Claymore. It's a gem and I'm damn happy to have got one, especially in such good original condition too.

When I was using my Claymore as my then main amp. Which I have tweaked by replacing all the crimp connections with solder joints equals big improvement. I found it was better than the then entry level 3 box Exposure pre power ( 6,7 & 8 ??? ).
It was also more musical than the Linn LK1 Dirak, LK280 Spark !! In the end I replaced it with the first of the Kairn + LK280 Spark. It wasn't until the Kairn got it's SMPS update that it really distanced it's self.

Great little amp that I have now got back, was on long term loan at my parents.

Oh just for the hell of it, my little gem...

Sorry if i've confused people, the Magnum amp i own is the much later 170SE, which (cue Colin swearing!) he didn't have anything to do with. ;)

Well sorry I did it was based on my "Oberon" series and Tony Relph as normal thought he should have it, so he stole it. We had a legal battle going on for many years.

I've got a Claymore which I have had since about 1985 (black MM like the one pictured). It still sounds good but it has always sounded too loud - at least to the wife. The volume knob has about 40 subtle clicks and its rarely above the third click which can make precise volume setting a little fussy. Someone said it could have a different pot fitted which would cure this ? I read that Colin doesn't undertake any work now? Does anyone have an idea on costs/recommendations. tia

Hi Ian,

I have few pots left but Paul Quick should fit it for you my silly old body shakes to much.
E-mail me a address to send it I will slip it in the post, the clicking one you have sounds like a linear pot used for balance and may have been replaced incorrectly.

Happy New Year Pink Fish readers.

Dear Mr Wonfor,

We are honoured to have a developer participating here.

I also recently acquired one of your magical The Claymore amps, albeit in a much worse condition. I wrote about it here. Luckily, I could negotiate with the seller and now I am destined to have it restored by a specialist on all british things HiFi in Germany.

If you have any specific suggestions for improvement or hints relating to a revision of my specific model (which I gather is an earlier revision) I'd be happy if you could share them.

Thanks and a Happy New Year,
Magnus Bosse
