Great one liners...

"I was 21 years when I wrote this song, I'm 22 now but I won't be for long"

Paul Simon - Leaves that are Green (and later nicked by Billy Bragg for A New England).

Mick

"She might have pissed in the sink, but I knew she was a nice girl, cos she moved the dishes first"

Supercharge.

Spitting out fine cheese by that tool from Blur, even the drummer’s a fcuking MP, fcuk off you cnut sir

Rupert Trousers - Sleaford Mods

"How can you lie there and think of England when you don't even know who's in the team"

Billy Bragg, Greetings To The New Brunette

Not really a one-liner, but since I'm listening to an instrumental version of it at the moment

"Although he may not be the man some
Girls think of as handsome"

It's amazing how many singers don't get the 'man some/handsome' rhyme, and render it as;

"Although he may not be the man
Some girls think of as handsome"

which just don't fit....

(Someone to Watch Over Me - George and Ira Gershwin.)

Listening to Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond duetting on it.

Interesting point, which I hadnt thought about before.

I actually prefer your 2nd version. for me the word "some" "belongs " with girls. ie it makes sense when in the "girls ' phrase. It flows better and feels more natural, although I accept it doesnt rhyme so well.

it doesnt feel correct to tag it on after "man", simply to make a rhyme. What does " Man some " mean any way?

A bit of artisic liberty taken there by The Gershwins... what do they know about songwriting !!!!

Ive just gone to see how singers did it. Here is Ella singing this song. She does it the way you prefer. !!! go to 2.12 in the tune.

For me it doesnt sound correct. Then in my view she compounds the error by breathing just before the word "think". For me it all just leaves the word " some" just hovering in no mans land, not making sense.

Ella F.... what does she know about phrasing !!!

here is another. Amy gets around this bad lyric writing ( IMHO )in a better sounding way. actually 2 different ways. 2.20 and 3.30 ............... Interesting

'tis the way it were writ, though....

Beats 1 & 2 of each bar - man-some - hand-some

(Man-2-3-4, Hand-2-3-4)

Give to any musician, and they'll play it that way. Linda Ronstadt's version;

Although he may not be the maaaaaaaaan (big pause)
Some girls think of (pause) as handsome (pause), to
My heart.....

Pauses in all the wrong places....

The clever bit is the fact that they made the rhyme. Like 'Manhattan' -

"Summer journeys to Niag'ra
And to other places aggra-
vate all our cares.
We'll save our fares;

I've a cozy little flat in
What is known as old Manhattan,
We'll settle down
Right here in town.

[CHORUS 1]
We'll have Manhattan,
The Bronx and Staten
Island too.
It's lovely going through the Zoo.

It's very fancy
On old Delancey
Street you know.
The subway charms us so,
When balmy breezes blow
To and fro.

And tell me what street
Compares with Mott Street
In July?
Sweet pushcarts gently gliding by.

The great big city's a wondrous toy
Just made for a girl and boy --
We'll turn Manhattan
Into an isle of joy.

[CHORUS 2]
We'll go to Greenwich,
Where modern men itch
To be free,
And Bowling Green you'll see with me.

We'll bathe at Brighton,
The fish you'll frighten
When you're in,
Your bathing suit so thin
Will make the shellfish grin,

Fin to fin.

I'd like to take a
Sail on Jamaica
Bay with you,
And fair Canarsie's Lakes we'll view.

The city's bustle cannot destroy
The dreams of a girl and boy --
We'll turn Manhattan
Into an isle of joy.

[CHORUS 3]
We'll go to Yonkers,
Where true love conquers
In the wilds
And starve together, dear, in Childs'.

We'll go to Coney
And eat balonie
On a roll,
In Central Park we'll stroll
Where our first kiss we stole,
Soul to soul.

And South Pacific
Is a terrific
Show they say,
We both may see it close some day.

The city's clamour can never spoil
The dreams of a boy and goil --
We'll turn Manhattan
Into an isle of joy.

[CHORUS 4]
We'll have Manhattan,
The Bronx and Staten
Island too,
We'll try to cross Fifth Avenue.

As black as onyx
We'll find the Bronix
Park Express,
Our Flatbush flat, I guess,
Will be a great success,
More or less.

A short vacation
On Inspiration
Point we'll spend,
And in the station house we'll end.

But Civic Virtue cannot destroy
The dreams of a girl and boy --
We'll turn Manhattan
Into an isle of joy!"
