General Election 2024

I actually worry how lefty the greens are. They need to attract voters from all sides of the political spectrum, or they’ll achieve very little.

"Saving the planet" is an inherently lefty or young peoples' idea whose time has not yet come in any serious way.

In contrast, Farage seems to have achieved a great deal in politics from a very narrow side of the political spectrum and never having won a GE.

If by a great deal you mean being instrumental in trashing our trade links with Europe and destroying free access to jobs and opportunities throughout the EU I would agree.

They need a critical mass of voters to gain traction and succeed as a mainstream party. Otherwise they’ll be forever pointless IMHO. I mean crikey, look how many votes reform are likely to pick up, and they don’t exactly have a strong or complete portfolio of policies.
UK voters either
1. Don't know there is a climate problem
2. Don't believe that the climate problem is real or serious
3. Think that what 1% of world population do on a little island is immaterial
4. Understand that with FPTP a vote for minor parties is wasted. Until it is obvious to all that it isn't. By which time it will be too late.

There is, they aim to win an election and then abolish money. In the UK I'd say that's the longest of long game strategies.

When I was young you needed to take an exam to get in.

That seems quite a popular view around here, yet we hear nothing about a party who sets out to do precisely this?!

Fair summary.

But as explained on the radio yesterday Refuk votes are spread across the country and will only earn them one MP, despite getting 4x more votes than Green which will also get one MP.

Labour is as much about socialism as we are.

You have a state pension. You have a public sector pension. You received state education. You received state healthcare. Your children did the same. You drive on roads, use public transport, live in a nation protected by armed forces, police, a justice system and countless other state facilities.

This is all socialism. Every last bit of it is socialism.

Even if you are way too dumb to realise it is socialism, it is socialism.

Oops.

Kevin Craig, Labour’s candidate for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, is the founder and chief executive of lobbying firm Political Lobbying and Media Relations (PLMR).

One of its current clients is the Independent Schools Council (ISC), an industry trade body for private schools, which has been campaigning against Labour’s plans to charge VAT on school fees and end the sector’s discount on business rates.

Not really a massive gaffe per se as commercial PR will often rep things they don’t necessarily agree with.

He may have no day to day contact with this client at all.

Client won’t be too happy though;)

I found this quite though provoking in the context of our election. No easy solutions in its focus on the green agenda but reflects a more widespread political confusion as to why pressing the old buttons doesn't work any more.

Now is that your idea of getting people to vote socialist ?

You made a speech but you haven't even told them how to vote socialist.

You are not alone in that. The left are certainly generating noise but where is the deployment.

Anyway I am about to indulge in a large Gin and Tonic, so I will call this quits for today.

I have already won some am now taking a back seat. Labour and the Tories are both in line with what I want, so no matter who wins, I am ok with it.

Job done as far as I am concerned.

What I don't understand is why have the lefties here just thrown the towel in. They seem not to be fighting, but tickling with a feather duster.
There’s honestly not much that can be done right now. Nothing very urgent going on with small far left parties - although still worth socialists’ while helping out there if they can IMO - and few points where pressure can be applied to Labour when the public is, not unreasonably, focused on getting rid of the Conservatives. There’ll be many more opportunities on the other side of the election.
