Different length speaker cables

My father ran uneven lengths of NACA5 from a 250 to 12inch Tannoy Golds. Sounded fine. I then upgraded and had some even lengths of NACA5 and substituted for his. He thought the improvement very noticeable. Went back to his old cables in case changing cables had cleaned contacts, sounded worse to him (I agreed btw), so returned to the equal lengths.

I'm running a pair of Spendor LS3/5as over uneven lengths (10ft and 16ft) of van den hul cs 122 on my dining room system and the world hasn't ended. Nothing wrong with the sound either. There is no law that I am aware of that says the amp has to be midway between the speakers.
